I can’t write. At all. It’s a mix of personal stuff, political stuff, motherhood stuff, and it all comes out in an incoherent jumbled mess–at best. I’m hoping one day to sort myself out, but in the meantime I’ve been reading.
And, I’ve found it really is the best self-care around. Books, an underrated treasure, basically have to ability to heal the world if more of us just stopped and read them. For those of us barreling through every single obstacle in life and just barely getting through them, books simply can’t be beat because:
1. Reading allow us an escape
For hours (some of them in the middle of the night), I can lay down what plagues me and step into the mind of someone else. Sometimes, kicking around in another person’s brain allows the time and sense of clarity to make sense of what is going on in my own mind. And, sometimes I just get to experience something excellent and exciting while sitting in my own bed.
2. Books teach us about life
No, I do not take my life advice from characters or dramatic story lines, but contained in each book is a sense of the human experience. Whether that book be comedy or commentary, there’s something we can learn if we take the time to reflect. The lessons are there for the taking, however we wish to apply them.
3. Reading hold limitless potential
As life falls into a routine, it can stagnate. Reading offers a limitless plethora of potential experiences FREE! for the taking (get yourself familiar with your library and ebooks, yo!). It can teach you about where you’ve been, where you are, and where you want to go both literally and figuratively. And, every author’s words hold new potential. Even better, everyday new potential is published in new authors’ words. It’s the only kind of buffet that is truly unlimited.
