Every part of your body has a purpose. Your nails are more than a fashion accessory. They provide a window into your health. Your nails can reveal problems with your liver, lungs, and heart. You should look at the appearance of your fingernails on a regular basis. Healthy nails are smooth and consistent in color without spots or discoloration. There are certain signs that may indicate an illness. For example, are your nails pale, bluish, yellow, or rippled? Do you have dark lines beneath your nails? Do you have pain or swelling around the nails? Are your nails mostly white with darker rims? If your nails have any of these signs you should have a healthcare professional look at them. You may have an underlying health condition.
There are ways you can keep your nails looking nice without spending a lot of money. You want to keep your nails clean to prevent bacteria from growing under them. Use moisturizer to keep your nails and cuticles from becoming dry. I use a cuticle oil and cream that you can purchase at Target or Walmart for $6. Use emery boards to file your nails. Do not use the metal boards because they are too harsh. Do not bite your nails. Consistently biting your nails may be a sign of anxiety. There is nothing wrong with treating yourself to a manicure or pedicure. Just make sure the place is clean and safe. Since COVID-19 is around, you should determine if the place is following CDC guidelines.
There are vitamins that help nails stay healthy. These includes zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C, and biotin. You can get these vitamins from the food you consume. For instance, pumpkin seeds, cashews, lima beans, and quinoa contain zinc. You can find vitamin A in carrots, sweet potatoes, collard and turnip greens, and salmon. Foods with vitamin C include citrus, cantaloupe, cabbage, cauliflower, and green and red peppers. Biotin is found in eggs, beans, peas, and dark chocolate.
Your nails provide important services. They help to protect your fingers from injury and help with performing daily tasks. Give them the care they deserve.
