“This above all: to thine own self be true.” This quote was written by William Shakespeare more than 400 years ago and is still relevant today. What does it mean to be true to yourself? It is determining who you are as a person. You should understand your likes, dislikes, and interests. The biggest challenge to being true to yourself involves not letting other people dictate how you live.
Why is important to be true to yourself? You cannot enjoy life if you are trying to be someone you are not. You will be frustrated and unhappy. You have peace when you are your authentic self. You have clarity for making decisions. Being honest with yourself allows you to be honest with others. It keeps you from being critical of yourself and others. You will not feel the need to follow the crowd. You will have more confidence than people who are not authentic. The original is always better than the fake.
Discovering yourself takes time. You want to discover your unique personality. I believe that comes with maturity. As I got older, I realized that I enjoyed my own company. When I spend time by myself, I feel refreshed. Taking time for self-reflection will help you grow as a person. If you define who you are others will not be able to define it for you.
Your personality may be different from the people around you. That is okay. Spend time around people who will let you be yourself. They do not have to act like you they just need to allow you to be yourself without criticizing or judging. Also, in the process of being yourself make sure you are not causing harm to others.
