Understanding Your Metabolism

What is metabolism? How does it impact our bodies? Why does it appear that some people can eat whatever they want and stay thin? Is it their metabolism? Does slow metabolism make it difficult to maintain a healthy weight?  Metabolism is the process of your body turning the food you eat into energy. We all need metabolism to live.

There is not a consensus on the role metabolism plays in a healthy lifestyle. There is a benefit to having fast metabolism; however, it is only a component. People with fast metabolism still need to eat healthy, exercise, get their rest, and reduce stress.

Our genes are the foundation for determining if we have slow or fast metabolism. Slow metabolism can make it harder to maintain a healthy weight; however, if you have slow metabolism, there are behaviors you can incorporate to help increase your metabolism. First you should exercise. Resistance training is great for building muscle which helps to increase metabolism. Get your sleep. Studies show that sleep deprivation has a negative impact on metabolism. Eating protein-rich foods can help increase metabolism. These foods include eggs, dairy, fish, meat, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Protein helps build muscle mass which helps increase metabolism. Some scientists believe that spicy foods increase metabolism. According to an article on WebMD, drinking water helps with metabolism. Some studies have shown that being dehydrated slows metabolism.

Be careful regarding products or supplements that promise to increase metabolism. You do not need to look for miracles. Consider increasing your metabolism naturally. There are no fast solutions for increasing your metabolism. Remember being healthy is a process. Think marathon instead of sprint.
