Eating healthy can mean different things to different people. Some people swear by being vegan, while others see the benefits of eating a balanced diet that includes animal products. I do not eat read meat; however, I do eat poultry and fish. I know people who eat red meat in moderation and are healthy.
Some nutritionist recommend staying away from processed foods. That can be a difficult endeavor. In the past I thought that processed food was only items like processed meat (bacon, lunchmeat, or sausage) or frozen dinners. However, processed food is any food that has been altered in some way during preparation. Processed food includes breakfast cereals, bread, cheese, granola bars, peanut butter, canned food, and pasta. An occasional slice of bacon or sausage is probably okay. You should not make these things a constant in your diet. You should read labels to see how much sodium, sugar, and fat are contained in the food.
The term “superfood” is being used now for certain food items. These foods are mostly plant-based and thought to contain high nutritional value making them good for one’s health. Blueberries, kiwi, kale, acai berries, broccoli, and sweet potato are some of the foods considered superfoods. You can go in the internet and find a more extensive list of superfoods.
There are health food scams you should watch. The US. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned food manufacturers against labeling foods as being “healthy” when they have high sugar, salt, or fat content. However, manufacturers use crafty labeling to disguise the health benefits of food. For example, there are breads that say “whole grain” when actually they contain a minimal amount of grains. They contain artificial preservatives and caramel coloring to make the bread look brown.
There are fake health foods, for instance, veggie chips are not a health food. Oatmeal is healthy until you get the flavored instant oatmeal. The instant oatmeal is usually loaded with sugar and salt. I thought vegetable-enriched pasta is healthy. Then I found out it is not much healthier than regular pasta. You can now purchase spiraled vegetables. It costs more than pasta; however, it is considered much healthier. You can also purchase a machine to spiral your own vegetables.
Most people want to eat healthy; however, it is not easy. It takes some work and research. First you need to find out what works best for you. A food may be healthy; yet, it does not agree with your body. When you find a healthy regimen it will provide you with great benefits.
