I got pregnant after I got clean, and I am very grateful for this, but I also know sometimes that isn’t always the case.
I clearly remember standing in front of a room full of people being recognized for having six months clean and being a VERY large 5 months pregnant and catching the side-eye.
Very recently I saw a lovely young pregnant woman catch that same side-eye as she was recognized for having 60 days clean.
That’s not okay to me, because I understand the place that scared young woman was 63 days before, and I want to celebrate with her where she stands today.
Sometimes women use drugs while pregnant, sometimes they use in front of their children, and sometimes children are taken from their mothers as a result. This doesn’t mean the mother doesn’t love her babies; the disease of addiction is powerful, and it seeks to destroy us, one piece at a time.
The disease starts by breaking the bonds of love, and often the next-to-last bond to break is that of mother and child. The last bond to break is our very bond to life.
I have seen babies born healthy and thriving, mothers regain custody of their children, scared and cowering little ones become boisterous and outgoing and I know in my heart that MOTHERS DO RECOVER because I watch it happen every day.
I’ve learned in recovery to judge less my sister’s shoes, until I walk in her footsteps.
