Faking it Until You Make It: The Do’s and Don’ts of Faking Success

There’s nothing new about the phrase “Fake it until you make it.” We’ve all seen it, the people that flash money, and think that they’re fooling everyone. When in reality, everyone of substance knows that they’re posing. “Faking Success” is only effective when your level of thinking elevates you to where you want to be. It’s unsuccessful when you “front” about who you are. I’ve put together a handy list of do’s and don’ts so that you can fake it and make it.


1.      Surround yourself with people that you admire in the field

When you’re around successful people, you’re bound to pick up their habits. People are more likely to take you under their wing, when you show them that you’re serious. Be personable, respect their time, and follow up.

2.      Elevate your thinking

You can’t reach new heights with old thinking. Read and listen to audio books about changing your mind. You have to re-program yourself, so that you can grasp your destiny. Knowledge is one of the best tools that you can have. Find out what you should know, and find out who the key players are. Be a sponge, and don’t walk into an industry blindly.

3.      Challenge yourself

Success is all about risk. There are some new opportunities that may scare you. Don’t talk yourself out of trying new things. You’ll only learn by applying all of that handy knowledge that you’ve spent countless hours, days, and years acquiring. Challenge yourself and be consistent

Do Not:

1.      Lie about your experience

Faking it does not entail fibbing. People check references, and you will ruin any credibility that you have by being dishonest. However, you can take the experience that you do have and amplify it.

2.      Charge excessive amounts for something you’re practicing

You should challenge yourself, however, do it at a price point that’s fair. Don’t charge your new client high-end prices, if you’re not sure if you can deliver. Charge a reasonable rate, and when you get more experience, increase your rate.

3.      Doubt yourself

We’ve all had to start from somewhere. Doubt is a nasty little thing that can keep you from living your destiny. You have the desire to do something great, because it’s what you’re meant to be doing. Take one step at a time, and forgive yourself for the past. You can’t move on, if you’re beating yourself up about the things that you didn’t do yesterday. Today you have exactly what you need to get through the day. Tomorrow will take care of itself.
