Movie night: Taraji P. Henson's "From the Rough"

Oscar nominee Taraji Henson stars in FROM THE ROUGH, the true story of Coach Starks, a former swim coach at Tennessee State University who became the first woman ever to coach an all men’s team at the collegiate level.  From the Rough opens everywhere on April 18th.

The film follows the true story of Catana Starks, a former swim coach at Tennessee State University who became the first woman ever to coach a college men’s golf team.

First Coach Starks built the team from the ground up with only one available African American golfer-Craig (portrayed by Robert Bailey, Jr.) a former caddy with plenty of talent but no confidence. The motley crew of golfers on Coach Starks’ roster included underprivileged kids from around the world: Edward, a lower class British youth with a rakish charm and a contempt for authority; Bassam, a French-Algerian from Paris, angry about the discrimination of his people, soft-spoken but likely to explode; Cameron, an Australian from a single-parent household with a childhood spent working, using golf as a means to escape; and Ji-Kyung, a disaffected South Korean from Orange County with a love for Hip Hop. The late Michael Clarke Duncan portrays Starks’ confidante in the film.

Could these kids work together to become a winning team? “I don’t focus on the past. I focus on potential,” Coach Catana Starks says in the film, and with that attitude she leads the team to set an all-time record at the PGA National Collegiate Minority Championship.

“Glad to see a movie that highlighted a woman who did something so positive, and at one of the nation’s most historic HBCUs,” says Six Brown Chicks Director of Audience Engagement Sylvia Snowden.  From the Rough is a great movie with a great message.”

“Taraji was passionate, relatable and raw,” says Six Brown Chicks’ A Comeaux. “The film was entertaining full of character and intrigue. It’s refreshing to root for the underdog!”

“Very captivating performances an ideal story that needs to be told,” adds Six Brown Chicks official correspondent Cabryl Breotti. “Coach Catana Starks’ ‘no excuses’ mantra is relative to all.”
