95 years ago, when husband and wife Joe an Katherine Sapp, opened the first Rainbow Cone in 1926 at 9233 S. Western that was only place to get what quickly became a Chicago treasure.The unique treat, that features five layers ice cream and sherbet was originally sliced (now scooped).
How “grandpa Joe” came up with this eclectic combination of flavors is a mystery. And somewhat amazingly, it has never changed.
The Secret Ingredients
The magical layers consist of chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (Venetian vanilla with cherries and walnut, pistachio and topped with orange sherbet.
New ice cream trucks added for 2021
The ice cream trucks that debuted in the summer of 2020 and quickly became a staple of the summer season are back with more locations for 2021.
Rainbow Cone now has four ice cream trucks that will be traveling around Chicagoland this summer, each one named after one of the colorful layers that make up the famous Rainbow Cone.

For events of 100 or more people, Rainbow Cone offers the trucks for rental opportunities to pop-up wherever theirs a party of special occasion.

Rainbow Cone continues to expand their reach in Chicago and nationwide with their locations in Beverly, Navy Pier, Lombard, their upcoming location in Darien along with nationwide shipping on Goldbelly.
More than the Original Rainbow Cone
In addition to the popular Rainbow Cone the line has expanded to the 5-flavor “Rainbow Cone,” sundaes and milkshakes.
