KOO’s Design of Sable at Navy Pier Delivers a First-of-its-Kind Chicago Experience
On a beautiful July day back in 2018, anticipation was high as the crowd sipped champagne, listened to speeches and applauded the ground breaking on the Sable Hotel–the first hotel on Navy Pier.

Little did any of us know what was lurking in the future. But through thick and thin including the temporary closing of Navy Pier (September 9, 2020 to April 2021) construction continued–not unlike phoenix rising from the ashes– resulting in the Sable Hotel.
About halfway down the pier, the seven story Sable Hotel overlooks the south side of the pier, Lake Michigan and the city skyline.
KOO principal Jackie Koo says, “I’m excited to have produced the structure that is respectful of Navy Pier’s linear profile and Festival Hall’s low-slung heigh while introducing a glass facade that references Chicago’s famous skyscrapers in a horizontal form.”
Each of the 223 guest rooms feature a window seat from which to view Chicago’s unparalleled skyline and the lake. The angled surfaces of each room’s window seat create a textured exterior that literally reflects the ever-changing range of light, shadow, and color of the lake.
The color palette is grounded by mixed neutrals and highlighted by a spectrum of blues and bluegreens like the colors of Lake Michigan, balanced with an overall ambiance of luxury.
Sable at Navy Pier is LEED Silver Certified. The building design preserves the century old Navy Pier structure.
