Taste of Chicago 2019 is history. The final day of the 39th annual food and music fest was yesterday. So now we can go back to our diets. But before that let’s take a look at what we ate.
The numbers are in. The festival featured more the 300 menu items from 80 eateries, including 36 newcomers.
This being Chicago, we would expect pizza, ribs and Italian beef to be winners.
And they are with Connies pizza dishing out 14,500 slices and Giordano’s (food truck) serving 11,200 pizzas.
Robinson’s No. 1 Ribs, who’s been at the Taste since the beginning, dished out 15,000 lbs of BBQ Rib Tips and 8,000 lbs of Hot Links.
Another long time Taste vendor, The Eli’s Cheesecake Co, not surprisingly, served 35,000 slices.
It was hot during the five day run of Taste so Ice cream, Gelato and ices were big sellers.Topping the list was Franco’s Ristorante selling 35,000 servings of Watermelon & Lemon Italian Ice and 7,000 servings of Sea Salt & Caramel Gelato.
And although the numbers aren’t in yet for Chicago’s Original Rainbow Cone (pretty sure they are still counting) we know they will be chart toppers.
Another icy treat, Paletas, Mexican ice pops, from La Mexicana, came in with big numbers at 128,000 sold. Mangonadas, a cool refreshing Mexican fruit drink from Esperanza helped 4000 taste goers cope with the heat.
Frannie’s sold 3,000 lbs of Italian Beef, while Billy Goat Tavern & Grill dished up 10,000 of their one-of-a-kind Cheezborgers.
Arun’s Thai Restaurant Pad Thai was a crowd favorite with 3300
Another Taste favorite, Turkey legs, from Premier Rolling BBQ were enjoyed by 2,000 eaters and another 8000 went for their Corn on the Cob.
Brazilian Bowl was busy cooking up 7,500 servings of Empanadas and 5000 Beef & Chicken Bowls.
Other vendors posting big numbers include Kasia’s Deli with 6000 Pierogis; Lawrence’s Fish & Shrimp (food truck) selling 6000 Lightly Breaded Shrimp; The Lifeway Kefir Shop providing 1850 tastes of their Original & Black Raspberry Kefir; Ukai Japanese serving 35 cases of Gyoza Pot Stickers and 40 trays of Yakisoba Noodles plus another 40 lbs of shrimp and 100 lbs of veggies.
Vee Vee’s African Restaurant Jerk Chicken & Goat Meat was a crowd favorite with a whooping 8,300 lbs of their meaty treats consumed.
Not far behind Yvolina’s Tamales served 6000 Vegan & Vegetarian tamales to the hungry crowd.
