The 53rd Chicago International Film Festival, (CIFF) coming to Chicago October 12 through October 26, 2017 unveiled the winning poster for 2017 at a kick-off event Tuesday night at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers.
The CIFF brings an array of electrifying, challenging and entertaining feature, Indie and documentary films along with directors, actors and producers from around the world to Chicago including likely awards-season contenders–such as last year’s La La Land.
The poster competition pits artists from more than 30 countries against each other to see whose work will represent the CIFF on posters, t-shirts, bags and other promotional items for this year’s 53rd annual event.
Designs are reviewed by a panel of Festival officials with the winning designer receiving a $2,500 USD cash prize and the honor of having created the Festival’s signature look.
This year’s wining design, created by Netherlands-born, German resident Edwin Smeenge, a self-taught painter and graphic designer was picked from 172 entries. The design features the 53rd Festival’s new tagline, “Because Life Is a Movie.”
CIFF CEO Micheal Kutza explains the choice of Edwin’s poster saying “Edwin’s image of a curious face looking out from the dark is perfect. It precisely captures the sense of curiosity, adventure and discovery that our audiences bring to the Festival. It also works so well as we have our international Film Noir section at this year’s Festival.”
