The Chicago Cubs have been on a roll since the All-Star break. Today they return to Wrigley Field, with a chance to get back into first place in their division.
The upcoming week with the Cubs hosting their division rival the St. Louis Cardinals July 21-23 and the first two games of the Crosstown Cup Series with the Chicago White Sox July 24-25 promises to be a hot one.
The Cubs are pulling out all stops during this homestand with unique food offerings from native Chicagoan Jeff Mauro, the sandwich king, and Hot Doug’s. In addition many of the city’s sports greats from the past and the present will be returning to take part in special activities at Wrigley Field.
Whether you’re in the stands (a limited number of tickets for this homestand remain available online or 800-THE-CUBS (800-843-2827) or just hanging out in surrounding Wrigleyville or watching on TV–here’s what to expect:
First Pitch & National Anthem
Today, Friday, July 21, Chicago Bears wide receiver Cameron Meredith will throw a first pitch, while Umphrey’s McGee will sing the national anthem.
Saturday, July 22, a member of the Los Angeles pop/rock ensemble R5 will throw a first pitch.
On Sunday, July 23, recently retired Chicago Blackhawk Bryan Bickell will throw a ceremonial first pitch. University of Illinois head football coach Lovie Smith will present the lineup card pregame.
On Monday, July 24, Jonathan Kirkland, Chris Lee, Colby Lewis and Wallace Smith from the Chicago company of “Hamilton: An American Musical” will sing the national anthem. Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg will throw out the first pitch and lead the stretch.
And wrapping up the Crosstown series on Tuesday, July 25, former Cubs pitcher and 1984 NL Cy Young winner Rick Sutcliffe will throw a first pitch and lead the stretch
Food and Beverage Offerings:
In case you haven’t been to the ball park lately, you may not know that the Cubs have kicked up their food offerings a notch.
Here’s what fans can expect during this homestand:
Jeff Mauro’s, (host of Food Network’s “The Kitchen” and Pork & Mindy’s executive chef and partner) BBQ chops and sandwiches (served July 21-25 at the Sheffield Counter, formerly Decade Diner, near Gate D) including:
- Pig Candy: Pork & Mindy’s candied bacon dusted with brown sugar and special P&M spice blend, then slow cooked until brittle.
- Pastramindy Reuben: House-smoked and hand-cut pastrami, aged Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing pressed together on marble rye bread
- Da Pig Candy Footlong: Vienna Beef footlong hot dog, crumbled pig candy, grilled onions, P&M mustard sauce and tempura fried sport peppers
- Buffalo Chicken Tot: Mulberry smoked hand-pulled chicken, P&M hot sauce, blue cheese crumbles and Jeff’s Buttermilk Ranch Dressing all piled on crispy golden tots
- Crispy Pork: Crispy buttermilk marinated pork chop, P&M apricot habanero aioli, lettuce, tomato and dill pickles on a griddled brioche bun
If that’s not enough, there’s Hot Doug’s rotating selections from Platform 14, (located behind the center field scoreboard in the Budweiser Bleachers). During this homestand fans can look forward to:
- The Bill Caudill, an Argentinian pork and bacon sausage with chimichurri and Swiss cheese
- The Sergio Mitre, a gyro sausage with tzatziki, feta cheese and chopped tomatoes; and the Rick Reuschel, a jalapeño-cheddar beef sausage with jalapeño mustard, pepper jack cheese and crispy fried onions.

Hot Dog lovers need not worry, after all this is National Hot Dog Month. In honor of the occasion Levy will serve–hot dogs with a twist–a specialty pizza on Monday and Tuesday, July 24-25, at the Giordano’s concession stand located near Gate K. “The Wrigley Stuffed Smokie” is a stuffed deep dish pizza filled with Vienna Beef’s Wrigley Field Smokies, roasted onions, mozzarella cheese and topped with Giordano’s signature pizza sauce–a Wrigley Field exclusive.
And, as always, traditional Vienna Beef Hot Dogs on a bun will be available in the stands and at vendors throughout the ball park.
Bud Fridays continue July 21, with up to the first 5,000 Budweiser Bleacher fans age 21-and-older receiving Cubs Sunglasses presented by Budweiser.
On Saturday, July 22, up to 5,000 early arriving fans age 13-and-younger will receive a Cubs Youth Sun Protection Shirt presented by Advocate Children’s Hospital, Mott 50 and the Pediatric Sun Protection Foundation. Up to 20,000 early arriving fans will receive sunscreen samples.
On Sunday, July 23, up to the first 5,000 fans age 13-and-younger will receive a Clark the Cub Pocket T-shirt presented by Mastercard.
