Just in case you can’t make the gala Oscar ceremony at Dolby, no worries, Chicago is pulling out the red carpet or at least the flat screens for viewing parties around town.

Perhaps the biggest is the annual blast at the Gene Siskel Film Center on Sunday, February 26th. Tickets are required for this one–Chicago’s longest-running awards show viewing party, “Hollywood on State: Where You’re the Star.”  More viewing parties take place at the Conrad Hotel, Commonwealth Tavern (2000 W. Roscoe St.) and The J. Parker (1816 N. Clark St.).

Get ready “fore” a long or short drive–depending where you are coming from–to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center (5555 N. River Road, Rosemont) for the Chicago Golf Show. There’s lots of merchandise, demos, dealers, activities and more that should suit you to a tee.

Chicago Dance Marathon

Saturday, February 25

The Chicago Dance Marathon at the Chicago Marriott Downtown is a party for a purpose.  Eight straight hours of dancing and entertainment with the proceeds raised from the event benefiting the patients and families of Lurie Children’s Hospital.

Andersonville restaurant week

Continuing through February 26

Andersonville, home to some of our favorite neighbor spots, is in the midst of its first ever restaurant week.  Prix-fixe dinners are priced at $10, $20, and $30 at places including Jerry’s Sandwiches, Lady Gregory’s, Big Jones, Hamburger Mary, Lady Gregory,  M. Henry and more.

Elmhurst College jazz festival

Did you know that Elmhurst College is a hotbed for jazz? This weekend you can check out some of the best jazz this side of New Orleans at the 50th Annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival. Four full days of performances from headliners including Dee Dee Bridgewater, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and Patrick Williams Big Band and tons more.

While your already out west for the Elmhurst Jazz Fest, you may want to head another 8 miles west for Wheaton’s Restaurant Week, In Good Taste.

Mardi Gras

Big Jones is having a month long Mardi Gras celebration

No need to fly to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Chicago has a host of Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras celebrations from neighborhood pubs to serious Cajun and Creole menus.

There’s the month long celebration at Andersonville’s Big Jones featuring a culinary journey down south with  with New Orleans Creole and Louisiana Cajun country cooking (Friday, February 10 through Thursday, March 2). Then there’s a New Orleans style Mardi Gras Bash at Chicago Cultural Center (February 25); a Mardi Gras Pub Crawl on Division & Rush (February 25, 2 to 8 p.m.); and parties, complete with hurricanes, beads and Mardi Gras decor at local pubs including Easy Bar on February 27 and aliveOne, Estelle’s, Remedy and Brando’s Speakeasy on February 28.

Craving a beignet? Stop by any of the Kanela Breakfast Club locations where Executive Chef Don Penza’s classic New Orleans beignets sprinkled with powdered sugar, will be available for $6 per order (5 beignets per order) on Fat Tuesday, February 28.

Chicago Volunteer Expo

Sunday, February 26, Peggy Notebaert Museum

The 5th Annual Chicago Volunteer Expo come to the Peggy Notebaert Museum (2430 N. Cannon Dr.)  Sunday, February 26 from 10 am – 4 pm. The Expo features over 85 nonprofit organizations from throughout the city.

Expo admission is free but pre-registration is encouraged– although not mandatory.

Northerly Island Polar Adventure

February 25, (12 to 4 p.m.)polaradventure

Live the wild life with a Polar Adventure at Northerly Island where you can watch birds of prey, see wolves and listen to folk music and a storyteller. There’s also craft activities and hot chocolate.
