Show Me Chicago's top things to do this weekend
Get out and enjoy the season.

As the holiday season winds down and the New Year kicks in, we start to shift gears as the last of the holiday celebrations wane.

With 2017 officially here, we are now looking forward to Chicago Restaurant Week coming up January 27 – February 9, 2017 and Chicago Theatre Week running February 9 through February 19, 2017.

Until then, here are our picks for things to do right now.

Pink Floyd and David Bowie Tribute

Friday, Jan. 6, 9pm-12am.

Two special tribute bands celebrate the musical careers of Pink Floyd and David Bowie at 210 in Highwood. Soundtracks of a Generation is proud to present ‘Breathe-The Pink Floyd Experience’ and SpaceFace for what promises to be one amazing evening. Tickets required.

Buddy Guybuddyguy

It’s January so that means Buddy Guy is in town for his annual winter residency at his club Buddy Guy Legends. Pick a time and get your tickets to see this legend live at his club.

January 5 – 15, 2017

Stage 773’s 16th Annual Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival is the perfect “Thing To Do In Chicago” on a cold January evening.

With a record breaking number of submissions and Brian Posen leading the festival, audiences can expect the best of sketch.

The eclectic line-up for 2017 boasts 160 groups performing 180 shows in a0 days. Headliners include award-winning LA sketch comedy troupe The Cool Table featuring Kyle Moore and returning favorites Heavy Weight (LA) featuring TJ Miller and Nick Vatterott, and New York’s Pop Roulette featuring SNL writer Sudi Green.

Tickets are $15 each with an all-festival pass at $250. Thursday, Friday, and half-day Sunday day passes are available for $35, $50, and $45 respectively.

The festival takes place on January 5 – 15 at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont.

Chicago Polar Dash polardashthumbs-up-runner

January 7

Start the New Year off on the right foot at the Chicago Polar Dash. Take your pick of a half marathon, 10K, 5K or 1700 meter.

House of Blues

January 6, 6:30 pm.

Check out the early days of rock with the best of the best when Presley, Perkins, Lewis & Cash jam at the House of Blues re-living the intimate musical session at Sun Records where  where the true spirit of rock was born. Click here for tickets and information.

Old Town School of Folk Music Open House

Also don’t forget the Old Town School of Folk Music’s (4544 N. Lincoln Avenue) New Year open house we wrote about in yesterday’s post. The three day event runs today, Thursday January 5 through Saturday, January 7.

There are lots of choices for ice skating in Chicagoland. Here are two of SMC’s favorites.

McCormick Tribune Ice Rink

When: Now through March 5, 2017 (dependent on weather)
Where: Millennium Park off Michigan Ave. between Washington St. and Madison St.
What: Now in its 16th season, the ice rink is a Chicago winter tradition.

Maggie Daley Ice Skating Ribbon

When: Now through March 5, 2017 (dependent on weather)                                                                                      Where: Maggie Daley Park, 337 E. Randolph St.
What: The skating ribbon, located in the heart of downtown Chicago, provides a skating experience that has been described as “alpine in the city.” Skaters follow a ribbon that has been integrated into the landscape with the city skyline as a backdrop. You can bring your own skates or rent them. The ribbon also offers a nearby place to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate.

Wrapping up the holiday season

Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light is still up and running at the Museum of Science and Industry; 5700 S. Lake Shore Drive. Now through January 8, 2017.

Winter WonderFest at Navy Pier (600 E. Grand Avenue) features 70,000 square feet of rides, giant slides, the Chicago Blackhawks indoor ice skating rink and more. Now through January 8, 2017.
