Old Town School of Folk Music launches New Year Kickoff open house

Old Town School of Folk Music (4544 N. Lincoln Avenue) is launching their first ever New Year open house–a three day event that kicks off tomorrow, Thursday January 5 (through Saturday, January 7).

The New Year Kickoff features a series of open house-style classes, music jams and workshops with something for everyone.

No experience required.

The open house offers the public an opportunity to sample a wide variety of courses from the school’s  more than 700 accredited class offerings that include music, dance and art including their popular Wiggleworms class for the wee ones–ages 0 to 4 (reservations are recommended for the Wiggleworms classes by calling 773-728-6000 or clicking here.)

Best of all most open house classes/events are free.

Here is the complete schedule of events:

Thursday, January 5, 10 am – 9 pm

10-10:45 am Wiggleworms Drop-In Class (age 0-4 years)

Drop in to Old Town School’s celebrated Wiggleworms early childhood music program. Make music and friendships in a nurturing environment led by a passionate teaching artist. ($19)

11 am-12 pm Wiggleworms Playtime (0-4 years)

Following the Wiggleworms class, meet early childhood program manager, Erin Flynn, and enjoy a free hour of playtime. Linger in Old Town’s cozy and creative play area with art-making and natural toys for open play.

6:30-9:30 pm Music Jam (all ages)

Join in the fun and make music together in this jam designed for old friends and new. The café will be open for conversation and mingling.

7-9 pm Placement Consultations for Music Students (all ages)

Not sure which class to take in the upcoming session? Old Town experts will be available to answer questions and provide guidance. Students are advised to bring their instrument to best assess their abilities. The café will be open for conversation and mingling.

7:30-9 pm Community Dance Jam (Adults)

All dance styles and levels are welcome, and guests are invited to bring favorite tunes to share as well. The café will be open for conversation and mingling.

Friday, January 6, 10 am to noon

Saturday, January 7, Family Day

10-10:45 am Wiggleworms Drop-In Class (age 0-4 years)

Drop in to Old Town School’s celebrated Wiggleworms early childhood music program. Make music and friendships in a nurturing environment led by a passionate teaching artist. ($19)

10 am-1 pm Family Art Workshop (all ages)

The whole family is invited to drop in for an artmaking experience with Old Town School teacher Beth Iska. Projects will be best suited for children ages 2 and up.

11 am-12 pm Family Dance Jam (all ages)
An action-packed event where the whole family gets to have fun dancing and playing movement games together! Guests are encouraged to wear dance party clothes.
11 am-12 pm Placement Consultations for Kids’ Music Students (age 4+)

Old Town experts will be available to answer questions and provide guidance as the appropriate music classes. Students are advised to bring their instrument to best assess your abilities. The café will be open.

12-1 pm Family Jam (all ages)

Jam with students and teachers from our Kids’ Music Program. All instruments, voices, and levels of players are welcome and encouraged. Come share your tunes, sing, and dance.

12-1 pm Placement Consultations for Kids’ Dance Students (age 5+)

Kim Davis, Dance & Movement Program Manager, will be available to answer questions and provide guidance as to the appropriate dance class. Dancers should be dressed and ready to move in case Kim needs to assess abilities.

6 pm Teen Open Mic (ages 13-19) *Takes place at Old Town School’s Armitage Hall at 909 W. Armitage, Lincoln Park

A monthly event featuring emerging singer songwriters, solo electric guitarists, vocalists of all kinds, spoken word artists, rappers, acoustic groups, Irish fiddlers, jazz bands, full-fledged rock bands, and more! ($3)
