58th Annual Dearborn Garden Walk

58th Annual Dearborn Garden Walk

Have you ever wondered what lurks behind the beautiful brownstones on Chicago’s Gold Coast and Old Town neighborhoods?

If so, you can see for yourself on Sunday, July 17.

Once every year the public gets an opportunity to visit some of the city’s most beautiful private gardens at the Dearborn Garden Walk sponsored by the North Dearborn Association (NDA).

More than 20 gardens ranging from minimalist to classic small gardens, patio/terrace designs and captivating container gardens will be showcased on the 2016 walk.

This year’s theme is “Inviting Gardens: Dressed to Party!”

Highlights of the walk include The Graham Foundation garden (4 W. Burton); the Latin School’s expansive rooftop garden; The Bishop’s garden (1555 N. State) and  the always popular garden vignettes created by some of Chicago’s most talented designers.

This year’s designers include Stanley Smith of Oak Street Design, Hunter Kaiser of Creative for Life, and Joseph Szymczak of Sourcing & Design.

Garden lovers will get a sneak peak of a private garden that will be featured in the upcoming issue of Better Homes & Gardens magazine.

For many, the Dearborn Garden Walk, is a tradition. In some ways, it’s a step back in time to kinder, gentler days filled with live jazz and classical music wafting through magical settings.DearbornGWSC_0111 copy

In other ways, the self-guided walk, is a way to catch up on some of the latest outdoor gardening trends and ideas while escaping from the concrete urban jungle into the lush green hidden gardens.

New to this year’s walk is the McCormick Mansion (1500 N Astor)–opening its garden for the first time ever to the public. Artist, Nancie King Mertz will be working in the garden while Nora Barton will provide two hours of live cello music.

Another, not to be missed area, is the unique Beekman Place–a gated community within the city where three gardens will be featured.

This is year 58 for Dearborn Garden Walk, set for Sunday, July 17th from noon to 5 pm.

New for 2016

New for 2016 are special gardening seminars on container gardening and herbs presented at 12:45 pm. and repeated at 2:00 pm. and hour-long  guided architectural walking tours of historic Dearborn Parkway at 1:30pm, 3:30pm, and 5p.m.
