Deciding how to celebrate Valentine’s Day can be stressful, not to mention EXPENSIVE–with $18.9 billion spent on the holiday last year or an average of $142.31 per person.
In the gift giving department, 31% of adults favored restaurant gift cards or a meal out, followed by jewelry, apparel, flowers, chocolate and perfume and cologne.
About a quarter of us are expected to dine out this Valentine’s Day, making it second only to Mother’s Day in the number of restaurant meals consumed. The average check per couple rings in at $139 vs. $85 for a typical non-Valentine’s meal–a 63% spread.
Here’s some Valentine’s Day happenings that are a little off the beaten path in Chicago.
A Hef-ty Deal
As part of “The Naughty Night on Division St.” (featuring six Division Street bars and restaurants), The Lodge Tavern is offering a blast from the past with their Playboy Key Club event. Guests will be greeted by a Hugh Hefner-look-a-like and surrounded by servers with the obligatory bunny ears and tails. 21 West Division Street, Chicago. 312 642 4406.
Busy Burger’s BUN-dle of Love
If you’re on a budget or still in school Busy Burger, located in University Village is offering a “BUN-dle of Love” two-for-one meal special on Valentine’s weekend from Saturday, February 13 to Sunday, February 14. The deal: four all-natural handmade Mini Burgers, two fresh-cut French Fries tossed in Busy Burger’s house dressing, and two Strawberry Milkshakes for only $15.16 (regularly priced $30.33). 1120 West Taylor Street, Chicago.
Yes, that Trump. If the sky is the limit and you’re a spa kinda girl or guy you may want to check out the “Diamonds – Not Just a Girl’s Best Friend” package at Trump Tower Chicago. For $5000 (and up), the Spa at Trump is offering guests the “opportunity” to enjoy private access to the pool and a 90-minute couples massage with Diamond Oil sourced from Dubai. Pair this with a bottle of premium champagne, flowers, sweet treats and a special gift and you’re sure to be a winner. Prices begin at $5,000 and will only be offered to one couple per night. The service is available February 13, 14 and 15 beginning at 10 p.m. each night.
Heart to heart
A heart shaped pizza gets the message across at Fabulous Freddies–and such a deal–only $10. The offer is good now through Valentine’s Day. Eat in or have it delivered. Add some chocolate dipped strawberries at $2.75 for 4 dipped strawberries making this one sweet deal. Fabulous Freddies Italian Eatery, 701 W 31st Street, Chicago, 312 808 0147.
Here’s how it works: Head to The Hangge-Uppe where you can play the Fuzzy Handcuff Game and/or take a fun boudoir photo, fully clothed, on a (faux) bearskin rug in front of a (faux) fireplace. No cover charge before midnight.
The Business of Love
Looking for the proper aphrodisiac to get in the mood? All you may need is a sexy drink like the Buongiorno ($12) and a Half dozen oysters on the half shell with champagne mignonette ($14). La Stanza Ristorante is offering these Valentine’s specials along with a full menu of other choices. 535 North Michigan Ave., Chicago.
Take the Plunge
On Valentine’s Day, four lucky couples will get married at the Willis Tower Skydeck. For those of you not ready to take that big a plunge, you can still enjoy breakfast in the sky including access to the glass-floored “The Ledge.” Click here for reservations and information.
