Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918- October 14, 1990) was a world-renowned musician throughout his entire adult life. He was Music Director of the New York Philharmonic and conducted the world’s major orchestras recording hundreds of these performances.

The magical evening features “On the Waterfront” shown on a large HD screen above the orchestra while the live orchestra executes the exciting, quick and sinister notes complementing the movie’s film noir elements.

Conductor Richard Kaufman returns to the podium to lead Bernstein’s pulsating score from the 1954 “On the Waterfront” film for this CSO at the Movies event. Kaufman has been a regular guest conductor on the CSO at the Movies series since 2004.

Kaufman will also lead three special holiday presentations of the classic comedy “Home Alone” with the John Williams’ score performed live by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Friday, December 11, at 7 p.m., Saturday, December 12, at 3 p.m. and Sunday, December 13, at 3 p.m.

Known as one Bernstein’s greatest works and his only original score for film,”On the Waterfront” premiered in 1954 and won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Marlon Brando’s portrayal of a boxer-turned- dockworker caught up in the dark and violent world of mob-controlled unions. The film also received an Academy Award® nomination for Bernstein’s score.

In this “special events” series, audiences are treated to live music from the entire score of the film presented by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) under the direction of various composers.  The “On the Waterfront’ film with live orchestra is one of three film programs in the 2015-2016 CSO at the Movies series.

Remaining film presentations in the series include:

  • Alan Silvestri’s score for the 1980’s sci-fi hit Back to the Future on Friday, March 4 at 8 p.m.
  • “Hooray for Hollywood,” a journey through cinema history with selections from classic movies Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, King Kong, Star Trek and more on Friday, May 6 at 8 p.m.
