Chicago Festivals and Events: Pitchfork to Sheffield Music Fest and more July 17-19

1. Taste of River North

Taste of River North offers upscale bites from neighborhood establishments including The Kerryman, Kinzie Chophouse, Farmhouse and more along with great music and merchants. LIVE bands include Rod Tuffcurls & The Bench Press, Sixteen Candles, and Waters. July 17-19, River North, Kingsbury and Erie Street, 630 N Kingsbury. Taste hours: Friday, July 17th – 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, July 18th – Noon to 10 p.m.; Sunday, July 19th – 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

2. BenFest 2015

Much more than a block party, St. Benedict Parish & Preparatory School’s annual BenFest offers live entertainment from great bands, craft beer, food, family fun at one of the north side’s longest-running family festivals. This year’s fest also features a marketplace (on Leavitt) and an all-new sports zone.  $5 donation requested at the gate. July 17-19, St. Benedict’s, 2215 W. Irving Park Rd.

3. Pitchfork Music Festival and Soho House Kick off event

If you haven’t scored a ticket for this weekend’s Pitchfork Music Festival featuring headliners Wilco, Sleater-Kinney, Chance the Rapper and many others, you’re not totally out of luck. Here’s why.  Soho House Chicago has paired with the Infatuation for a kick off to the Pitchfork Fest featuring an ‘Ice Cream Social’ open to the public.  It’s a chance to check out Chicago’s newest happening spot and enjoy some IC along with frozen versions of the House Tonic cocktail menu plus a mini market curated by April Francis from Dose Market.

The fun market will offer 8-10 festival stations including a Local Eclectic tattoo and Cowshed nail art station, Sprout Home flower crowns, a braiding booth, paint-your-own parasols, and more. Kick off party, Soho House Chicago, 113-125 North Green Street from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., July 17.  Pitchfork Music Festival, July 17-19, Union Park.

4. Sheffield Garden Walk & Festival

The Sheffield Garden Walk & Festival offers a heady combination, music and gardens, not to mention food, beer and family fun at this 47th annual event. Two stages of music features headliners Cowboy Mouth, Rusted Root and Sister Hazel.

Self-guided garden tours plus a limited number guided garden tours and architectural tours are also on tap.  Saturday/Sunday, July 18-19, Noon-10 p.m. both days, Lincoln Park, Sheffield and Webster.

5. Chicago Craft Beer Festival

Chicago Craft Beer Festival will be heading to the Windy City brewing up samples of more than 80 craft beers from over 40 brewers this Saturday and Sunday in the heart of DePaul/Lincoln Park area–in conjunction with the 47th annual Sheffield Music Festival & Garden Walk at the same location.

Seasonal and small batch beers from local, regional and national craft brewers will be on tap. Among the featured offerings are; Chicagoland’s Argus, Bucket List, Miskatonic, Noon Whistle and SlapShot breweries; Minnesota’s Surly Brewing; Kalamazoo’s Bell’s Brewery; Vermont’s Magic Hat; and California’s Anderson Valley.  Fest hours are Noon-10:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Tasting hours are from 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. both days.

6. Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks

Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks kicks off their annual summer Bard Fest this weekend at Chicago’s Navy Pier with two FREE performances at Navy Pier’s Polk Bros. Park on Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18 at 6:30 p.m.  The Pier’s Polk Bros. Park is located on the South Lawn in front of Navy Pier. 4 Star Brass Band will be featured at both performances.

7. SausageFest Chicago

SausageFest Chicago returns to Wrigleyville this weekend with over 50 gourmet sausages, drinks, and a live music showcase–both indoors and outdoors at The Cubby Bear.  Saturday and Sunday, July 18 and 19 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. $5 entry fee.

8. North Dearborn Street Garden Walk


If you are looking for something a little more laid-back than the Sheffield Music and Garden Fest, the North Dearborn Garden Walk is right up your alley. Your ticket offers admission to 20 distinctive rear gardens along with complimentary live jazz and classical performances in select gardens and light refreshments along the route. Sunday, July 19,  Noon – 5 p.m., $35, $30 advance, entry at The Latin Middle School (45 W. North Blvd). Check out photo’s and commentary from the 2013 walk here.
