Christmas Around the World at the Museum of Science and Industry

Thanksgiving week in Chicago offers a lot more than just shopping. There’s the parade, the official tree lighting ceremony, family theater and more. Show Me Chicago has put together a calendar of Thanksgiving week events so you won’t be left out in the cold–unless you want to be.

Tuesday, November 25th

  • 2014 Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, Daley Plaza, Washington & Dearborn – Live performances and music begin at 4:30 pm; Tree lighting at 5 p.m.
  • The new Santa House opens on Daley Plaza (through December 24)
  • Ice Skating at Millennium Park
  • A Christmas Carol – Goodman Theatre – 7:30 p.m.
  • AnnieCadillac Palace Theatre – 7 p.m.
  • Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical, Chicago Theatre,  7 p.m.
  • Christkindlmarket, Washington and Dearborn, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Christmas Around the World at the Museum of Science and Industry features more 50 trees from various traditions and cultures.

Wednesday, November 26th

  •  A Christmas Carol – Goodman Theatre – 7:30 p.m.
  • Annie – Cadillac Palace Theatre – 7 p.m.
  • Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical – Chicago Theatre – 7 p.m.
  • Porgy and Bess, Lyric Opera of Chicago, 2 p.m.
  • Black Wednesday events at bars across Chicago
  • Lookingglass Alice, Lookingglass Theatre, 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
  • Christkindlmarket, Washington and Dearborn, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Christmas Around the World at the Museum of Science and Industry features more 50 trees from various traditions and cultures.

Thursday, November 27th

  • McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade, 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. on State Street—from Congress to Randolph

  • 23rd Annual Wreathing of the Lions,  10 a.m.-3 p.m. (Wreathing at 10 a.m. followed by family activities inside the Museum)
  • Holiday Lights Tour from Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co., 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m. or 7 p.m.
  • Porgy and Bess, Lyric Opera of Chicago,  2 p.m.
  • Lookingglass Alice, Looking Glass Theatre, 3 p.m.
  • Black Friday Sales and Shopping everywhere
  • Caroling at Cloud Gate (the BEAN) returns November 28th for the holiday season., 6 p.m.
  • Lincoln Park Zoo’s ice  rink opens
  • ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo kicks off this weekend with lights, music, ice sculptures, special activities and more.   5 to 9 p.m.
  • Christmas Market, National Museum of Mexican Art, 10 to 4, 1852 W. 19th St.
  • Sing-A-Long Sound of Music, Music Box Theater, 3733 N. Southport Ave.  4 & 8:30 p.m.
  • Christkindlmarket, Washington and Dearborn, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Christmas Around the World at the Museum of Science and Industry features more 50 trees from various traditions and cultures.

Saturday, November 29th

  • A Christmas Carol – Goodman Theatre – 2 p.m., 8 p.m.

  • Hansel & Gretel: A Wickedly Delicious Musical Treat, Broadway Playhouse,  10 a.m.
  • Lookingglass Alice, Looking Glass Theatre, 3 p.m.
  • Holiday Lights Tour – Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co. – 6:00pm, 6:30pm, 7 p.m.
  • Vienna Boys Choir: Christmas in Vienna at Symphony Center features the Vienna Boys Choir when they return for their annual Thanksgiving performance at 3 p.m.
  • Sing-A-Long Sound of Music, Music Box Theater, 3733 N. Southport Ave. 11:30 a.m., 4 & 8:30 p.m.
  • ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo kicks off this weekend with lights, music, ice sculptures, special activities and more.   5 to 9 p.m.
