Chicago Fashion Focus Week 2014 Events

Chicago will be looking good this week when it turns the spotlight on the Windy City’s booming fashion scene with a week-long series of events.

Fashion Focus Week, kicking off today, is a citywide celebration of Chicago’s Fashion landscape–from the art and fashion industry to its emerging and established fashion designers, boutiques and more.

Highlights of the week, running October 14th through the 19th, include a Fashion Town Hall networking event for industry professionals, runway shows and shopping events.

Public events

The Chicago Cultural Center will host the following two FREE public events in the Sydney R. Yates Gallery (4th Floor North):

  • On Wednesday, October 15th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sanford-Brown College (formerly the International Academy of Design and Technology) will present REVOLUTION–a runway show featuring creations from the school’s junior, senior and graduate fashion designers. Highlights of the show spotlight emerging designers Javonica Sapp with her 2015 line of bridal gowns and Mamie Kapend with her Ngewebwa’s 2015 African print inspired line.
  • On Thursday, October 16th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Chicago City of Learning will present the Style Bias: Street Style by Hive Chicago and STEAM STUDIO. The pop-up design studio and maker space will showcase the output students apply to solve real-world challenges focusing on the influence of science, technology, engineering, art and math.

Other public Fashion Focus events take place in Millennium Park.

  • Get ready for spring at the Friday, October 17 The Art of Fashion Runway Show  featuring spring 2015 looks and trends from 12 Chicago-based designers. The event features designers including: Annie Andrews, Calvin Tran, Christina Karin, Eva Pazola, Hector Javier-Monarrez, Heidi Hess, J Toor, Mark Roscoe, Alyce Paris, Shernett Swaby, Squasht and Voyeur by Vex. The evening kicks off at 6 p.m. with the runway starting at 7:30 p.m.  Click here for tickets.
  • Fashion-conscious men will want to head to Millennium Park’s Chase Promenade South tent on Saturday, October 18th and Sunday, October 19th when Northern Grade showcases the latest in menswear featuring vendors of products manufactured in the United States with a line-up including clothing, footwear, gear, games, paper goods, grooming supplies and more. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
  • You can shop ’til you drop at FashionChicago®, the designer shopping event at Millennium Park in the Chase Promenade North tent on Saturday, October 18 and Sunday, October 19. The special event will feature more than 30 of Chicago’s apparel, jewelry and accessory designers.  10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Dressing rooms will be on-site.

Industry events

A Fashion Town Hall networking event kicks off Fashion Focus Week tonight (Tuesday, October 14) at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.) from 6-9 p.m. The evening will feature industry professionals for a panel discussion with the “makers” and the process of and resources needed to create successful fashion businesses in Chicago.

Keynote speaker, Nena Ivon will share her expertise and industry knowledge. Ms. Ivon was at Saks Fifth Avenue Chicago for 53 years serving in various roles including: Director of Fashion, Special Events and Publicity. She is currently working fashion studies students at Columbia College Chicago. Ryan M. Beshel, marketing lead for Purely Fashion, will emcee the Town Hall.
