Chicago Summer Festivals 2014: Wicker Park Green Music Fest

Green living takes center-stage at this weekend’s 6th annual Wicker Park Green Music Fest.  This environmentally-conscious Chicago Summer Festival sets itself apart from others by mixing great bands with eco-minded vendors.

Two stages programmed by Wicker Park’s own Subterranean will feature non-stop live music all weekend with the sounds from cutting-edge local groups to national touring headliners like Moon Taxi and Guided By Voices.

This year’s fest will be turning up the volume with the new ‘petal powered’ stage. This green alternative is a powerful natural energy source provided by cyclists.

Eight stationary bikes, plugged into a generator, will be the energy source for all of the main stage’s amps, guitars, spotlights and more.

The faster people petal, the more energy they will create for the music.  Cycling teams, spinning instructors and bike enthusiasts are all invited to participate.

Of course, all of the things that make a summer fest a summer fest will also be on tap alongside the rockin’ musical performances.

Throughout the green vendor village, festers will discover ways to save money by making their home efficient; buy local fresh and organic treats; learn about environmentally-friendly crafts and products while enjoying food and drinks.

For kids, the Green Family Fun Fest provides two afternoons of programming from, noon to 5 pm each day, packed full of  educational children’s activities including: recycled arts and crafts, DIY musical instruments, henna artists, a bounce house, mini-golf, a kiddie play area, and children’s musical programming.
