The month-long show (the first of its kind for the garden) opens this weekend. “Escape to Paradise” offers a welcome respite from the cold with its tropical setting featuring more than 10,000 orchids in floor-to-ceiling displays.
Orchids are everywhere from the Garden’s Greenhouses and Regenstein Center to The Garden’s Lenhardt Library where a special exhibition, “Exotic Orchids” features a collection of rare volumes depicting orchids.
The garden’s greenhouses recreate the natural habitat of orchids with cascading and climbing varieties growing on trees and rocks featuring brilliant and fragrant blooms. Make sure to check out the chocolate-scented Sharry Baby (Oncidiumand).
Visitors can bask in the tropical surroundings or they can get serious about orchids through educational programming, special events and information.
Orchid lovers will have an opportunity to purchase their own orchids at the Orchid Marketplace in Burnstein Hall weekends during the run of exhibition–now through March 16, 2014.
Orchids from the show will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the exhibition. Members can purchase show orchids starting on Wednesday, March 19. The general public will have their opportunity starting on Thursday, March 20 through Saturday, March 22 or while supplies last.
