Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday: Celebrations and Specials

Let the Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday celebrations begin. Don your purple, green and gold, the traditional colors of Mardi Gras, and head to some of the best celebrations this side of the Mississippi and north of Rio in Chicago.

Did you know Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday? Fat Tuesday, traditionally the last chance to binge on rich, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, is the perfect excuse to erase the chill of winter with Cajun and Creole cuisine, music and festivities.

Don’t let the cold winds throw you, it’s hurricane season in Chicago.  Chicago is under a hurricane watch starting today with scattered hurricanes predicted throughout the city accompanied by sazeracs, crawfish and jambalaya with a chance of Beignets continuing through next Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, March 4.

So get ready for all kinds of weather with Mardi Gras blowing into the Windy City.

Untitled Super Club

A celebration promised to rival the best of Bourbon Street features Cajun and Creole cuisine including a “Crawfish boil” along with the ten-piece Lowdown Brass Band and their horns ranging from sousaphone to trumpet is on-tap at Untitled (111 W. Kinzie) for Tuesday, March 4 from 4:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. (kitchen closes at 10 p.m.).

The Pony (1638 West Belmont) brings the taste of  Mardi Gras to the menu with specials like $7 Jambalaya and Chicken Po’ Boys. Thirsty? Check The Pony’s featured drink specials including: $5 22-ounce Pony Punch Hurricanes, $5 Hand Grenades, $5 Abita pints, and $9 Abita flights (Purple Haze, Turbo Dog, Amber, pictured here). Specials: Thursday, February 27 – Tuesday, March 4.  Abita Sampling: Tuesday, March 4 at 8 p.m.

Indoor Bar Crawl

Put on your masks and load up on beads as you hop from bar to bar in the comfort of 70 degree temperatures at “The World’s Largest Indoor Bar Crawl” at Navy Pier. Seven bars along Navy Pier will be offering $3 Bud Light Drafts, $4 Goose Island 312 Drafts, Goose Island craft beers, and $5 Southern Comfort Hurricanes plus entertainment.  Saturday, March 1, from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Commonwealth Tavern

Commonwealth Tavern celebrates Mardi Gras, N’awlins style, with $7 Hurricanes and Jambalaya – creole stew, crisp chicken thigh, paulina andouille and shrimp over rice; $17 from Thursday, February 27 through Fat Tuesday, March 4.

Frontier Fat Tuesday Shrimp Boil


Frontier (1072 North Milwaukee) celebrates Fat Tuesday with an authentic Louisiana shrimp boil complete with potatoes and corn by New Orleans bred, Chef Jupiter who draws from closely held family secrets for his Cajun/Creole creations. Frontier will feature $8 drink specials including a Mardi Gras Gin Fizz, Hurricanes, Sazerac, and Hand Grenades.   Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. $33 per person.

Fat Tuesday Party

Creole Stomp is bringing their genuine Cajun music to Metropolis Performing Arts Centre with a Creole Stomp featuring blues, jazz, rock and R&B styles blended together with fiddle, accordion and washboard to create the sounds of Louisiana. March 4, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $28.  847 577 2121.

Bourbon Street Comes to Chicago

The Nouveau Tavern’s (358 West Ontario) Mardi Gras celebration kicks off Friday, February 28 and keeps on going right through Fat Tuesday with a series of Mardi Gras events in their “Bourbon Street Lounge.” The Bourbon Street lounge, located in the back bar area at Nouveau Tavern, will be adorned with all things Mardi Gras and will feature Nouveau’s “Flight of Hurricanes.” The flight, consists of three special hurricanes, each representing a city where Mardi Gras is celebrated: Brazil, New Orleans and Chicago. What might be the best deal in town on Tuesday, March 4, the final day of Mardi Gras festivities, Nouveau Tavern will be offering $1 mini hurricanes and $1 mini bites.

Lottie’s Pub Mardi Gras Special Specials

Lottie’s Pub (1925 W Cortland) celebrates Mardi Gras with drink specials and menu items plus a free brand sampling with Abita. Specials: Thursday, February 27 – Tuesday, March 4. Abita Sampling: Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m.

Municipal Bar Celebrates Mardi Gras

In celebration of Mardi Gras, Municipal Bar + Dining Company  (216 W Ohio) is offering $4 Millers and Coors drafts, $6 Hurricanes, and $20 Hurricane fish bowls plus New Orleans inspired dishes including beignet pastries, shrimp and sausage gumbo, and a squid Po’Boy.  On Fat Tuesday, Municipal will feature live New Orleans Jazz music from the Chicago Diamond Trio from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Specials: Thursday, February 27 – Tuesday, March 4.

Mardi Gras Specials at Takito Kitchen

In celebration of Mardi Gras, Takito Kitchen (2013 W. Division St.) has put together a Southern Trio shared plate with spiced rub pork belly, Alaskan king crab stuffed jalapeño, cornbread, tomato hibiscus and ghost pepper salsa for $10 and a Jambalaya Taco complete with corn tortilla, andouille sausage, shrimp, pickled trinity, Urban Till parsley and crispy rice for $15 for 3 or $19 for 4.  Thursday, February 27 – Tuesday, March 4.

Raise a Glass to Fat Tuesday at HUB 51

Hurricane Alert.  HUB 51 (51 W. Hubbard) wants their guests to experience a bit of The Big Easy with a round of HUB Hurricanes for just $8 a pop.  Hungry, you can’t go wrong with their sushi, salads or tacos.  312 828 0051.

Celebrate Mardi Gras with Bub City Specials

Celebrate Mardi Gras at Bub City. In addition to BBQ staples like pulled pork, fried pickles and a slew of mac and cheese offerings, Bub City is cooking up a taste of  Louisiana that features Gumbo and Oyster Po’Boys ($9.95) on Tuesday, March 4th.

Mardi Gras Themed Specials at Newport Bar and Grill

Newport Bar and Grill (1344 W Newport Ave.) invites Chicagoans to celebrate Fat Tuesday with themed food and  drink specials including $4 Abita Mardi Gras Bock, $4 Abita Purple Haze, and $3 Fireball shots. Food specials include $5 Jambalaya and $6 burger and fries. Cajun, Brass Bands and Zydeco themed music will be played to set the Mardi Gras spirit. Abita Brewing Co. swag and Mardi Gras beads will be given away while supplies last.  Tuesday, March 4.

M Vie Mardi Gras Celebration

M Vie (1372 W Grand Ave,)  is working on a festive Mardi Gras Celebration. They will offer hand crafted Hurricanes & Southern Specialties on Wednesday, February 26 through Fat Tuesday. The celebration will culminate with 5 piece live band playing traditional and festive New Orleans Jazz.

Head to “Carnival” at Nacional 27

Forget Rio de Janeiro. Instead, head to Nacional 27 (325 W Huron St) in River North for the next best thing at their “Carnival″ celebration. From Thursday, February 27 to Saturday, March 1, the Nuevo Latino restaurant and lounge will feature a variety of live entertainment.  312 664 2727.

Shaw’s Crab House Makes it Big and Easy to Party

Starting Friday, February 28th through Fat Tuesday, Shaw’s (21 E. Hubbard) will have a sea of oyster specials, live music and special additions to their Sunday Brunch featuring the New Orleans tradition in the heart of Chicago.
