ZooLights Lincoln Park Zoo 2013 is definitely something to roar about.  Visitors will see the Zoo in a whole new light–actually two million zoolights2222lights–that transform the zoo into a winter wonderland.

Da light-filled fest is on-target to kick off at 5 p.m. Friday, November 29.  ZooLights will continue Saturday and Sunday nights November 29th through December 1st, December 6th through the 8th and then will continue nightly from December 13th through January 5th (except December 24 and 25).

Be on the lookout for twinkling lights, larger-than-life illuminated animals, holiday crafts, family activities and sweet treats at this year’s 19th Annual ZooLights Festival.

Take a chilly spin on the Endangered Species Carousel, learn some pointers from ice sculpture experts, and be sure not to miss the shimmering light show choreographed to holiday music on the zoo’s South Lawn.

Santa Claus will be available for requests and photo opportunities at Kovler Lion House.  In addition to the jolly old elf and the big cats, snacks and festive winter warming drinks are available for purchase at the Lion House along with holiday crafts and shopping.

The first 900 visitors each night to ZooLights receive a free pair of 3D glasses for a truly magical light display experience.

A reason to arrive early…

If you get to the zoo before 5 p.m. you may want to check out the zoo’s newest Kangaroo, a red kangaroo named Joey.

Joey is the first red kangaroo ever to be born at Lincoln Park Zoo, and the first offspring for mother Anna, 7, and father Jacob, 5.

The little roo came into the world in May, weighing less one ounce which is typical for baby kangaroos. Joey has been residing in his mother’s pouch since then, but peeked out for the first time on November 21. Proud new mom, Anna, baby Joey, and the whole mob can be seen on exhibit daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Antelope and Zebra Area.

New this year…

  • Ice Skating at Lincoln Park Zoo.  Ice Skating will be offered from noon to 9 p.m. daily, beginning November 29, and continues long past the holidays until March 2 (except December 24 and 25). Tickets to skate are $5 and skate rentals are available for $5.
  • Members-Only Night at ZooLights on Thursday, Dec. 5. This special night offers Lincoln Park Zoo members an exclusive opportunity to enjoy all of the holiday festivities with limited crowds. To learn more about becoming a Lincoln Park Zoo member–click here.
