Here’s hoping you’re hungry, Chicago…Mid-July is weighing in with a ton of food events celebrating a cornucopia of tastes from Taste of Chicago to the inaugural Windy City Smokeout. It’s patti-mania in Roscoe Village this weekend where the only thing that tops the burgers is the outstanding musical line-up featuring Sister Hazel on Saturday and Cowboy Mouth on Sunday.
Not to be left out in the cold is the hot dog. With July celebrating National Hot Dog Month, Gaper’s Block is getting into the act with its Hot Dog Cookoff. All this and more–fueled with lotsa music and adult beverages–makes for another weekend of fun in the sun.
Not into the fest scene? No worries, there’s a boatload of family activities along with boat races ranging from the Mackinac Race on Lake Michigan to the Dragon Boat Races along the riverfront at Ping Tom Memorial Park.

Race to Mackinac
More than 300 ships are expected to set sail in the Race to Mackinac, the oldest freshwater race in the world on Saturday, June 13. Themed festivities in conjunction with the race will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free. Navy Pier, 600 E Grand.
Taste of Chicago
Music, family fun and food are all on the docket at the 33rd Annual Taste of Chicago. But first and foremost remember that food is king at the country’s largest out door food festival. Visitors can expect a diverse lineup of 35 restaurants, plus pop-ups and food trucks featuring African, American, Caribbean, Chinese, German, Indian, Italian, Thai, Vietnamese cuisine and more at the five-day free admission festival from July 10 through July 14 in Grant Park.
Two outdoor stages, two indoor stages, food and over 30 craft beers at Lincoln Square’s Square Roots Festival, July 12-14, Lincoln Square, between Montrose and Wilson.
Irish American Heritage Festival
Irish dancing, music, food, family fun and more at the Irish American Heritage Festival, July 12-14, Irish American Heritage Center, 4626 N. Knox.
Windy City Smokeout
The Windy City Smokeout, sponsored by Bub City will present “the Best of BBQ and Country Music Talent” with a heady mix of live country music, beer and BBQ from some of the city’s top BBQ spots including: Smoque, Lillie’s Q and Bub City. A one day pass is $30 and a three-day pass is $60. July 12-14, River North, Hubbard and Rush Streets.
West Fest offers what has been called one of the “top” music lineups of the summer that includes Tortoise and the Oblivians along with all the expected fest activities. July 13 & 14, on Chicago Avenue between Damen and Wood in West Town.

Chinatown Dragon Boat Races
Approximately 30 boats race in this fast-paced Dragon boat competition from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday July 13 at Ping Tom Memorial Park, 300 W. 19th St.
Ice Cream Social
Hotel Lincoln is offering free ice cream right outside their doors at 1816 N. Clark on July 13, 1-3 p.m. Adults and children are welcome to make their own sundaes or choose from a selection of sweet treats and enjoy live music plus children’s activities including a sidewalk chalk art contest, four square games and face painting.
Bucktown Garden Walk
It may be too late in the summer to tip-toe through the tulips but it’s not too late to stop and smell the roses at the Bucktown Garden Walk this Saturday July 13th and Sunday, July 14th from 11 a.m. -5 p.m. (rain or shine).
