Taste of Chicago 2011 Prognosis: Boom or Bust?

Taste of Chicago 2011 Prognosis: Boom or Bust?

This year the City of Chicago launched a more laid-back Taste of Chicago.  The Mayor’s Office of Special Events passed the Taste “torch” to the Chicago Park District with a mission of creating a kinder, gentler, safer and more budget conscious Taste.  In order to carry out this vision the Park District scaled back the emphasis on big musical acts and focused on bringing the Taste back to its roots as a family-oriented celebration of food. In addition, they beefed up security both inside and outside of Grant Park.

Did They Succeed?

Preliminary reports by the Chicago Police Department indicate that there were almost 50 percent fewer arrests this year, a 20 percent decrease in citations for soliciting, panhandling and/or peddling without a license, and zero incidents reported involving illegal weapons. Early reports also indicate less visitors attended this year’s Taste.
