The New York Post call’s Elton John’s  musical, BILLY ELLIOT, “The Best Show You Will Ever See.” Time Magazine said, “Billy Elliot is the “Best Musical of the Decade.” “Impossible to Resist,” is the way the Chicago Tribune summed up the current production.  Audiences love Billy and its fans are loyal.  Many have followed the show around the world. However, there are some who are not fans. Have you seen Billy? When? Where? How many times? What do you think? Do you have a favorite?

THE STORY.

Billy Elliot the Musical is the joyous celebration of one boy’s journey to make his dreams come true. Set in a small mining town in England, the story follows Billy as he stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class, discovering a passion that takes him by surprise, and takes his whole family on an incredibly uplifting adventure.

THE FOUR CHICAGO BILLYS.

Rotating in the title role of ‘Billy’ in the Chicago production of
Billy Elliot are Tommy Batchelor, Giuseppe Bausilio, Cesar Corrales and
J.P. Viernes.

TOMMY BATCHELOR.
14-year-old, Tommy, the oldest of the Chicago Billys, is also the most
experienced.  He played Billy on Broadway for nine months before coming
to Chicago. He started his dance training at age four at the Dance
Factory in Minnesota and continued training at Palm Beach Ballet Center
in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida where he lives with his family.

GIUSEPPE BAUSILO.
Giuseppe, the “baby” of the four Chicago Billys, is 12. He is from
Bern, Switzerland and in addition to being a talented dancer can speak
five different languages. When he’s not rehearsing or playing the role
of Billy, Giuseppe enjoys cooking, skiing, riding his bike, playing the
cello, football and Kung Fu Wushu. Playing Billy is a dream come true.

CESAR CORRALES.
Cesar is 13 years old and was born in Mexico. He currently lives in
Canada with his parents, who are also dancers. Many have said that he
has the potential to be one of the best Billys ever. What’s truly
amazing is that he has only been dancing for  2 years.

J.P. VIERNES.
J.P. just celebrated his 14th birthday on May 30th. He was raised in
Half Moon Bay, in California and inspired by is sister to study
dancing.  His initial contract to play Billy runs through September of
this year. However, J.P. says, “I’ll be in it as long as my voice
doesn’t change, or I don’t grow.

BILLYS AROUND THE WORLD.

In addition to the Chicago production of Billy Elliot, the show is currently playing in London (since 2005); and on Broadway in New York City (since October 2008).  It is scheduled to open in Seoul, Korea this August and in Toronto, Canada and Tokyo, Japan in 2011.  The Sydney and Melbourne, Australia productions have closed.  A number of other productions throughout the U.S., from Houston, to Seattle to Cleveland to Tampa and in-between are scheduled to open this year and next.

  • JohnnyC has me in total numbers but I have now seen the show 18 times in Chicago. 6 times in London and 59 times in NY since Jan 1 2010. I have seen13 Billy's total.

  • I'm really not the world record holder for seeing Billy Elliot the Musical more times than anyone else. I have a friend in England who has seen the production there over 400 times! I do believe my (now 176) performances seen in London and America is a record for anyone living outside the UK.

That is amazing. Now that I have seen the four Chicago Billys I am beginning to understand the attraction. It really is a different show with each Billy. I would love to see some of the other productions around the world as well as some that will be opening not too far from Chicago.
