In tonight’s match up between the New York Liberty and the Chicago Sky, a familiar face was on the court but no longer in a Sky uniform. In fact, Epiphanny Prince looked too good in her Liberty regalia and she took it to her former team in a big way scoring 30 points in what led to a Chicago Sky loss. Prince was a two-time All-Star over her five seasons in Chicago before the Brooklyn native was dealt to New York for Chicago native Cappie Pondexter on Feb. 16. She missed the first 10 games in New York, including an 89-81 win at Chicago on June 30, while playing for Russia in the Eurobasket tournament. Unfortunately for Sky fans, Prince’s return to her old stomping grounds led to a royal stomping of the Chicago Sky by the Liberty – tonight’s final NY 77, Chicago 63. Our MVP candidate Elena Delle Donne led the Sky with 17 points while Vandersloot had 13 and Pondexter scored 12 – our only 3 scorers in double digits.
Tonight’s game featured too many turnovers, sloppy passing and poor shooting as exemplified by the following stat – entering the game as the WNBA’s top scoring team averaging 85.7 points per game (ppg) Chicago shot a season-low 29.9% from the field, scoring just 63 points in the game, their lowest point total of the season. Prince was asked after the game about returning to play against her old team and she stated, ” I had fun tonight. I played with them [Chicago Sky] for five years, so they know my game and I know them.” I guess she DID have fun pouring in a season-high 30 points with such ease it was painful to watch as a Sky fan but beautiful to watch as a fan of women’s basketball. I really enjoyed watching Prince when she played for the Sky – she was one of my favorite players over the years and I was sad when she was traded to New York. I was REALLY sad tonight because I miss her and now I am ticked off at her (not really) for pouring in those 30 points AGAINST us instead of FOR us!
The friends I was with all commented that it looked like there was a lid on the basket for the Sky – the normal layups, 3 pointers and 10 foot jumpers failed to go in no matter who was taking the shot. And there were way too many “one and dones” – those plays where the Sky shoot, miss the basket and the ball goes back to NY. I personally hate “one and dones” so tonight’s game was very frustrating to watch in this regard although my group had a blast at the game despite the outcome. Glad to see the arena was pretty full with fans and the people we sat near were really into the game….also gotta say I’m stylin’ in my new Pink Chicago Sky T-shirt supporting the BHA (Breast Health Awareness) initiative the Sky and the WNBA are promoting this week around the country.
No rest for the Sky as they face the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday afternoon at Allstate Arena….another very tough team and a re-match from last year’s WNBA Finals. Better get that lid off the basket in time for Sunday’s game so our scorers get back on track. GO SKY!!!
Enjoy some pics from tonight’s Pretty in Pink game….
Sloot on the Move
rebound, rebound, rebound
get the lid off of that Sky basket – tough scoring night!
