The Phoenix Mercury looked like the best team in the WNBA once again tonight and trounced the Chicago Sky by 29 points – leading to another Finals record for biggest loss in Finals history. The Sky started out hanging pretty tough against the Mercury in the first quarter but by the second quarter and second half, the Mercury were virtually unstoppable scoring from all over the court leading to double digit totals for all 5 Phoenix starters by the end of the game.
Sky superstar Elena Delle Donne was back in the lineup and contributed 22 points while Epiphanny Prince found her game tonight and added 15 points but there were no other Sky players in double digits. Fowles had a rough game only scoring 4 points, Young had 2 and Vandersloot added 6 – all but one of the Mercury starters had more points each than these 3 Sky players combined. The end result – a huge loss and the Sky are in a deep deep hole in this best of five series.
There weren’t many high points in this game for the Sky once the second half kicked in and it soon became evident that Chicago just could not keep up with the Mercury on any level. Phoenix out-rebounded the Sky 42-29 – another bad double digit stat in the Mercury’s favor. It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t fun to watch, and it is putting the Sky in a very tough position being down 2 games to a Mercury team with so many offensive and defensive weapons and all the confidence in the world on their side.
How do you motivate a team that is in such a deep hole? On the positive side, the next game is at home in Chicago; Delle Donne is back; Piph is scoring; and the Sky have been the comeback kids all year. This will be a comeback of historic proportions so my motivation to the Sky would be to say in one simple phrase “Y’all COMEBACK NOW, HEAR?” GO SKY!!!
