In what started out as a close game in the first half with the Chicago Sky and Atlanta Dream exchanging baskets and no team really pulling ahead by more than a few points, the second half was when the tide really turned in the favor of our Chicago Sky thanks to our strong bench players. Oh and a certain player named Elena Delle Donne who poured in 27 points tonight leading all players in the game. Yes, Atlanta did not have their all-star Guard/Forward Angel McCoughtry but we still did not have two of our star players either in Fowles and Prince. What we had tonight that Atlanta didn’t have was bench players who came in the game and made a huge difference starting with DePaul alum Allie Quigley whose 3-point baskets led to the tide turning in the 2nd half and had a direct impact on the Sky beating the Dream 87-73. Plop plop, swish swish, oh what a great win it is – the Sky are now a perfect 4-0!
As with the TV broadcast, I have to give two game balls out tonight – one to our Ms. Delle Donne, a graceful scoring machine who can score from all over the floor, and the second game ball goes to Allie Quigley for coming off the bench and pouring in 3 pointers that helped the Sky surge to a lead and never look back in the 2nd half. Also having strong games were Goodlett, Vandersloot, Gatling and Clements all scoring in double digits. I have to reiterate again that this Sky team looks so good and it will be so much fun to see how much better they get when our two missing starters return – Prince is expected to return next week while Fowles continues to recover from her hip surgery.
Enjoyed seeing rookie Shoni Schimmel play for Atlanta and she looks very comfortable in the pro ranks scoring 17 points in tonight’s game as her team’s 2nd leading scorer led only by Center Erika deSouza who had 18 points. Schimmel was a star guard at her alma mater Louisville and her transition to the pros seems pretty seamless so far. But as much fun as it was to watch Schimmel play, it was even more fun watching our Chicago Sky beat Shoni and her Dream team from Atlanta.
Next up – the Minnesota Lynx on Monday, May 26 at Allstate Arena with a 2:30 pm tip-off. It’s supposed to rain on Memorial Day so get your tickets to this game and watch the Sky rain on Minnesota’s parade! GO SKY!
