Guest Blogger: An Active Moms Journey with Infertility

A Sane Girls Guide is excited to introduce a new guest blogger today, Cassandra Hawkinson.  Cassandra is a personal trainer and founder of Active Moms’ Clubwhich provides Chicago moms with prenatal and postnatal fitness classes they can bring their children to.  She is also an infertility “survivor” and mom to her twins.

If you know me, you know my struggle to conceive a child was not a secret. I rode the emotional and physical roller coaster ride of infertility for nearly two years. A successful pregnancy finally began in late December 2010 after one IUI, two cycles of IVF, and two different fertility clinics.

Ironically, while my husband and I were working on our family, I had another  “offspring” I was nurturing, the Active Moms’ Club. My business put me in front of pregnant and new moms everyday, and I faced the same line of questioning: “Do you have kids? How old are your kids?” Moms were shocked that I wasn’t a parent – and why wouldn’t they be – I’m the creator of a program for moms. The more I talked about my journey, the more I learned that I was NOT alone. I was amazed – there were many women in the Club that relied on some form of Artificial Reproductive Therapy (ART) to conceive. AMC moms proved to be the support I needed to lift me up on challenging days. They were willing to discuss their journey, and offer guidance and insight. I felt a bond with these moms – we all belonged to a sisterhood.

Throughout this journey, I always remained optimistic that I would be a parent…it would happen…it was just a matter of time (and, of course becoming pregnant now was never soon enough). In addition to optimism and support, being able to relieve my stress through some form of physical activity was essential for my mental wellbeing.

After an unsuccessful round of IUI and IVF, my husband and I sought out a new fertility specialist. We felt we were receiving a one-size-fits-most approach to conception. We wanted more personalized attention and care from our doctor. Through a referral, we found the perfect match for us. Our new doctor gave me comfort in knowing exercise was not impeding our treatments to conceive. Less than a year later he gave us the most hair-raising, heart-stopping news we desperately wanted to hear: YOU’RE PREGNANT! Then, we received even more wonderful news: You’re having TWINS! Woah! Not only did we conceive, we conceived twice! My optimism paid off.

Everyone woman has her own unique journey, but there is no reason to face the journey alone. Seek out a support group. Shine Chicago is a unique and tremendous resource for women who are trying to get pregnant. Be true to yourself and seek out a doctor who you feel has your best interest at heart. You will be successful. You will be a parent. Remind yourself of that every day.
