What the heck is a Summer Sailstice?
After years of sailors sitting around talking to each other about how to get more people sailing, to introduce people to sailing, and how “We should have a day where we invite the public down to the waterfront and take them for a sailboat ride” John Arndt from the magazine Latitude 38 (the country’s top regional sailing magazine) decided that it was time to stop the talk and act. He created Summer Sailstice to simply formalize a bunch of dock talk.
The idea is to get all sailboats out sailing on the Saturday closest to the longest day of the year, maybe they just invite their friends, neighbors, family and/or co-workers out for a sail, maybe it is an organization that does make an open invitation to the general public to come to the lakefront and give sailing a spin.
- You can enter your own boat and do your own thing.
- Your organization can organize an event.
- Just get out and sail and take whoever you want!
Summer Sailstice this year is June 18-19, 2016. Participation in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana is up 400% over last year.
