In a stunning comeback, USA was down 1 race to 8. With the first to 9 winning the cup. Then they figured out how to sail better and faster overnight. Day by day they added more wins. Tuesday the two teams were tied up 8 – 8. Wednesday the final race occurred. New Zealand won the start, and rounded the first mark ahead of USA. The two boats were incredibly even in speed. At the second mark New Zealand was ahead. On the third leg of the course, USA started to pick up speed, just a little, and after a few tacks squeaked ahead of New Zealand. And then just lengthened the lead over the 4th and final leg to the finish line beating New Zealand by 44 seconds.
Congratulations to Oracle Team USA for the most stupendous comeback I have ever seen. Wow. Final score Oracle Team USA 9 wins, Emirates Team New Zealand 8 wins. Rock on Cinderella!
That concludes the America’s Cup 34 for 2013. The possession of the Cup remains with Golden Gate Yacht Club in San Francisco Bay. When this starts all over again in 2017 when the Cup is next competed for.
