Quick, name the fastest growing county in the country. Of course, if you read the headline of this post you know the right answer. But if you hadn’t, would you ever have guessed it was Kendall County, Ill.?
Turns out, though, that this county, about as far-flung a suburb of Chicago as you can get, grew nearly 100 percent in the last nine years according to the U.S. Census Bureau. You can read all about it in this story by CNNMoney.
According to the story, and the Census Bureau, Kendall County’s population jumped from 54,563 on April 1, 2009, all the way to 104,821 on July 1.
That’s impressive. It also shows just how much the residential real estate slump has changed the way the country is growing. It used to be the sunny places that boasted the fastest growing counties, places like Arizona, California or Florida. Today, though, those states have been slammed by falling housing prices.
Suddenly, the relatively stable Midwest, even with its nasty winters, looks pretty good.
