Weekend Planner: Top 5 Family Events in Chicago / Oct. 11, 12 & 13

Below is the Raising World Citizens list of the top 5 events for families in Chicago this weekend – Friday, October 11, Saturday, October 12, and Sunday, October 13.

1. Irish Books, Arts and Music (iBAM!) Celebration
Irish American Heritage Center, 4626 N. Knox Ave. (Irving Park)
Sat., Oct. 12 and Sun., Oct. 13
$10 admission (children 12 and under are free)

The 5th annual Irish Books, Arts and Music celebration – iBAM! – takes over the Irish American Heritage Center this weekend. The festival, which celebrates Celtic culture this year, features a packed kids schedule on Saturday and Sunday. Each day, children can enjoy craft projects, a scavenger hunt, storytelling, sing alongs and other activities from 12 – 5 p.m.

2. 2013 Chicago Marathon Celebration Day
National Hellenic Museum, 333 S. Halsted St. (Greektown)
Sun., Oct. 13 (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.)
Free Admission

The National Hellenic Museum in Greektown invites you to cheer on Chicago Marathon runners from its prominent spot at Mile 16. Admission is free to the museum that day, and kids will be able to participate in Olympic-related crafts activities in celebration of the Chicago Marathon.

I am a huge fan of the Chicago Marathon and proud that Greektown and other neighborhoods will be in the spotlight for this premier event.

3. Market Harvest 
Chicago French Market, 131 N. Clinton St. (West Loop)
Thurs., Oct. 10 – Sat., Oct. 12
Free Admission

The Chicago French Market (one of my favorite markets in Chicago) rings in fall with a sampling of its vendors’ seasonal offerings. Throughout the market, you can enjoy complimentary fall-inspired tastings of pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin spice soup, caramel apples, pumpkin spice tea lattes, pumpkin cayenne pepper cheesecake brownies, American Craft and German Oktoberfest beers, and more!

4. Second Sunday: Draw Tomorrow Today
Hyde Park Art Center, 5020 S. Cornell Ave. (Hyde Park)
Sat., Oct. 13 (1 – 4 p.m.)

Hyde Park Art Center teams up with Big Draw Chicago for an afternoon of art. Participants will create a “collective vision of what’s to come” by contributing to a communalmural focused on their hopes and fears for the future.Looking for another artistic activity for the afternoon? Then, head over to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Streeterville for the museum’s first Family Day of the season (free for families with children 12 and under).

5. Swedish Way Weekend
Swedish American Museum, 5211 N. Clark St. (Andersonville)
Fri., Oct. 11 – Sun., Oct. 13

Free admissionThis weekend is the weekend to head to Andersonville. The neighborhood celebrates Swedish Way Weekend at the Swedish American Museum with special events all weekend. At the museum, you can enjoy a “Swedish Cafe” in the gallery and browse a market with children’s clothing, special-made clogs, Swedish treats and more.

After your visit to the Swedish American Museum, you can  enjoy Andersonville Arts Weekend, which features a self-guided art walk through the neighborhood and a variety of performances and other events.
