Weekend Planner: Top 5 Family Events in Chicago / Oct. 18, 19 & 20

The weekend is almost here… That means it’s time for the Raising World Citizens list of the top 5 events for families in Chicago this weekend – Friday, October 18, Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20.

1. Bucktown Apple Pie Contest
Holstein Park, 2200 N. Oakley Ave. (Bucktown)
Sun., Oct. 20, 2 – 5 p.m.
$2 admission

The 9th annual Bucktown Apple Pie Contest will feature more than 150 bakers vying for the chance to win the title of best of “pie.” In addition to sampling pie, children can enjoy arts and crafts activities, carnival games and inflatable pony racing (which I can’t find to find out more about…).

2. Chicago Architecture Foundation’s Open House Chicago
150 buildings throughout Chicago
Sat., Oct. 19 and Sun., Oct. 20
Free admission

This weekend, the Chicago Architecture Foundation will present the third annual Open House Chicago. On Saturday and Sunday, 150 buildings will be open to the public, offering a unique opportunity to gain access to Chicago’s unique buildings, spaces and places.

3. Chicago Fine Chocolate and Dessert Show
Navy Pier’s Festival Hall, 600 E. Grand Ave. (Streeterville)
Friday, Oct. 18 – Sun., Oct. 19
$25 for adults, $10 for children

This weekend, world-class confectioners will descend upon Navy Pier to amaze people with their artisanal chocolate creations. The three-day event features live pastry demonstrations, seminars and vendor samples. They had you at “chocolate,” right?

4. Intergalactic Bocce Tournament
Whole Foods Market Lincoln Park’s Rooftop, 1550 N. Kingsbury St. (Lincoln Park)
Sat., Oct. 19
A small fee will be charged to support the Wicker Park Bocce Club

This weekend, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery will bring its Intergalactic Boccee Tournament to the Midwest for the first time ever. The tournament will feature 24 teams and is expected to raise more than 1,000 for the newly formed Wicker Park Bocce Club (1944 W. Crystal St.) – one of the newest places to play bocce in Chicago. While the deadline to register for the tournament has passed, the public is invited to watch the championship round on Sat. afternoon.

5. Travel Day with JettingAround.com
Multilingual Connections, 2518 W. Armitage Ave. (Logan Square)
Sunday, Oct. 20 (1 – 4 p.m.)
Free admission

For JettingAround.com’s third anniversary, the Chicago-based travel and culture blog is throwing a party at Multilingual Connections – and you’re invited! The celebration toast travel, world cultures and languages, and will feature travel presentations, speed language classes, prize drawings, live music and refreshments.
