A Leap of Faith: My Gift to Self in 2015

A Leap of Faith: My Gift to Self in 2015
A leap of faith. Last year I decided to take it. This decision came at a time of profound changes. My relationship with a couple of clients came to an amicable but final end. I lost a couple of friends. I left my home and community of 20 years for an unfamiliar town 30 miles... Read more »

Parent Point: Catch Them Doing Good and Tell Them So (Positive Reinforcement)

“Like black coffee, a negative comment is very strong. You need lots of sugar to cut the bitterness and make it sweet. You need lots of positive reinforcement to balance out the bitterness in what you say.” Edye Deloch-Hughes Excerpt from “Raising Hell or Raise Them Well” Chap. 6: Raise Discipline to an Effective Level... She called her baby a bitch.

She called her baby a bitch.
My family and I were walking out of the convention hall after spending a couple of hours at the annual car show. Hundreds of people were entering and exiting. A family of six briskly followed the herd in front of us. Two women, one twenty-something, the other early 40’s, had four kids under twelve in... Read more »

This Blog vs. that Book

This Blog vs. that Book
I’m guilty as charged.  I sacrificed the upkeep of this blog to finish writing a book; a parenting book that is, aptly named Raising Hell or Raise Them Well. My feverish quest to complete the thing forced me to keep this blog in semi-limbo. But I’ve been writing and rewriting this book for well over... Read more »

4 a.m.

4 a.m.
Tick Tock. It’s four o’clock. Do you know where your mama is? Right here in  the dark eyes of the room, trying to find my sheep to count. But they aren’t in my  pasture.  They are having tacos with the sandman. My sheep are taking a lunch break from their jumping duties. Not good. With... Read more »

Losing It.

Losing It.
Losing it. How do you control what is going on in your life when you are left with no steering wheel? Not being in control is an issue for many of us, especially when it comes to raising your kids. They can piss you off. Sometimes that piss gets a little “stanky”. The toddler years... Read more »

I Am Mother Nurture

I Am Mother Nurture
I am Mother Nurture. I’m good at it. I’m excellent at listening to your problems, giving you insightful yet honest advice, holding your hand, hugging and empathizing. I’m so good, sometimes I offer it without you asking. Not trying to be bossy or controlling. I just want to help. Take it easy with me. My... Read more »

Charleston Church Massacre: Blackhawks coverage trumped Black lives?

Charleston Church Massacre: Blackhawks coverage trumped Black lives?
I heard about the Charleston Church Massacre via Facebook. I found some articles posted on my friend’s site. Nine innocent black victims were gunned down in an historic Charleston South Carolina church; An apparent hate crime carried out by a 21 year old white terrorist. At the time, a manhunt was launched to find the... Read more »

I Wish My Parents Knew...

I Wish My Parents Knew...
Did you read about the Denver teacher, Kyle Schwartz who devised a unique way to get to know her students better? She asked her children to complete the sentence, “I Wish My Teacher Knew…”  Schwartz received some honest and heart felt responses such as, “I wish my teacher knew… I have no friends to play with.”... 2 sons: Born 6 years apart, 6 weeks premature and with ADD

2 sons: Born 6 years apart, 6 weeks premature and with ADD
I didn’t know what was wrong with my three year old. “Squeak” was my first born. He was so energetic and a bit obstinate. His first words were uttered at the clothing store, “Mommy, I don’t wanna go!” Squeak preferred to run amok inside the store racks. Oh, why wouldn’t he settle down? He... Read more »

    Edye

I pursued a satisfying career in the advertising industry, served as a volunteer mentor and parent educator at my two (now grown up) sons' schools and have actually stayed happily married for over a quarter of a century. However, my most gratifying achievement was raising my sons well. I'm not saying there wasn't a little bit of hell raising going on, but you live and learn. Now I'm passing the knowledge on to you. My goal is to turn these nuggets of wisdom into reference books for parents.
