Do you ever say to yourself, “If only I knew then what I know now…” From time to time those thoughts try to ambush me.
If only I knew then to invest my money in retirement in my early 20’s, then I would be living extra large.
If only I knew then how to say “no” freely and without guilt.
If only I knew then that family doesn’t always love you like you think they should – if at all.
If only I knew then that there are givers and takers. If you’re a giver, guard your heart like a taker otherwise everything will be taken from you.
If only I knew then that you have to let your kids work stuff out on their own, suffer a little, without you running behind them.
If only I knew then that my mother did the best she could raising me. I did the best I could raising my sons. And my son is doing the best he can with his.
If only I knew then that eating three pieces of Kentucky Fried Chicken, mashy ‘taters, slaw and a lemon parfait in my youth would contribute to my weight gain adventures now.
If only I knew then to devise an effective work exit strategy BEFORE I saw the handwriting on the wall.
If only I knew then to enjoy my attractive body instead of complaining I was too fat.
If only I knew then to avoid living an ordinary life, I would have become a working artist.
If only I knew then to accept my mom’s invitation to accompany her to Marva Collins honorary event. Mom gave a speech that evening then died early the next morning. Tomorrow is the 31st anniversary of her death.
If only I knew then…to stop mulling over mistakes I made in the past. I learn from them, but I’ve also learned not to set up house in my regret. That’s what counts. That’s what I know now.
