It is the giving season and many of us are looking for ways to help people and pets in need. One of the areas that always need donations are the pet food pantries in the Chicago-area. These organizations provide food, cat litter and a few other basic items to families when the going gets tough, helping keep pets with their family. Local shelters and rescues also need food and supply donations as well and are running various pet food drives and pet supply drives to help them take care of the animals in their rescue.
You can help when you’re out shopping by picking up a few extra cans or bags of food or cat litter and other supplies. Here are some groups with organized drives that could use your help. Check out the bazaars and craft shows supporting rescue here and this week’s events (including photos with Santa) here.
Chicago – Alive Rescue is always in need of supplies for the animals in their care such as non-leather leashes and collars, gift cards to pet supply stores, biodegradable poop bags and cat litter, blankets, towels, Heartgard, Frontline, pet toys and office and cleaning supplies. A complete list is here. You may emall them at email@example.com to arrange for the donated items to be dropped off.
Care Animal Hospital
Libertyville – Care Animal Hospital at 1101 West Park Avenue works with many rescues in Lake County and has set up a Rescue Giving Tree. There are envelopes for each rescue on the tree that lists items that they need. Take an envelop and donate as many items as you’d like. When you bring in your donation, put it in the proper rescues box and return the envelop to the tree. You can also donate to a portion of an outstanding vet bill. You get a $20 gift card for CARE.
Chicago Animal Care and Control/Safe Humane Chicago
Chicago Canine Concierge is running a leash and supply drive for Chicago Animal Care and Control and Safe Humane Chicago through the holidays.The drive is looking for leashes for when dogs are walked at CACC and blankets for their kennels. Here’s a more detailed wishlist.
Chicago Party Animals
Chicago Party Animals is holding their Annual Pet Food and supply drive through December 21. They are accepting non-opened cans and bags of dog and cat food, cat litter and gently used bedding, collars, leashes, pet clothing, carriers and toys. You can drop items off at events or contact CPA at 773-383-3647 (DOGS) to arrange a drop off time. Distribution will be on December 21 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. for rescues and families struggling to feed their pets. Watch their Facebook Page for more details.
Crossroads Shih Tzu Rescue
Virtual – CSTR is holding an online supply drive to help provide items needed for Polo’s Refuge, the organization’s senior sanctuary. Shop from their Amazon online wish list for the special items needed by the organization.
Doggy Style Pet Shop
Chicago – Doggy Style Pet Shop is spreading holiday cheer by hosting supply drives for four local organizations – Found Chicago, Tree House Humane Society, Leaving Tracks and ALIVE Rescue. There are wish lists for all of the groups in the store. If you want to help, add items from any of the lists to your purchases at check out and Doggy Style will wrap your gift and put it under the tree for the tree and hang an ornament in your honor from the tree. You will also get 5% off your next purchase for donating. Doggy Style is at 2023 West Division.
Chicago – The Second Annual Stock the Shelter Party will be held at Parlour at 6341 North Clark from 7 to 10 p.m. on December 18 to benefit Found Chicago. Some of the items needed include toys, Kongs, Rawhide (not made in China), Bully sticks, peanut butter, new and gently used towels and blankets, gift cards from pet supply stores or Target and canned dog food. The party feature $3 drink specials and more.
Lulu’s Locker Rescue
Worth – Through December 29, Lulu’s Locker Rescue will hold a cat food and litter at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church at 11007 South 76th Avenue. The organization is ideally looking for grain free canned cat food and clumping cat litter. The church is open for drop offs from 8 to 5 weekdays and 8 to noon on Sunday.
Nina’s Pet Food Pantry
Buffalo Grove – Young at Heart Pet Rescue is in need of donations for Nina’s Pet Food Pantry. The organization collects pet food and pet supplies that are distributed through the family food pantries at Palatine Township Food Pantry and St. Francis de Salles Food Pantry in Lake Zurich. Donations of pet food of any kind (as long as it’s unopened) as well as toys, blankets, beds, and anything else pet related are being accepted at Vet Specialty Center at 1515 Busch Parkway in Buffalo Grove through December 31.
Pawing Four-Ward Drive
South and West suburbs – It’s A Pittie Rescue is hosting a “Pawing Four-Ward Drive” through December 18. The list includes collars, leashes, dog and cat toys, pet food, Heartgard, Frontline, unscented cat litter, peanut butter, canned pumpkin and other items. Items may be dropped off at Feedlot in Channahan, Chew on this in Frankfort, Fuse in Manteno, Animal Wellness Center in Monee, Two Bostons in Naperville, Norridge Animal Hospital, Suzy’s Salon Peotone and Pets Etc in Plainfield. Grayslake – The 2013 Michael Shane Lechner Supply Drive runs through Christmas Eve at Save-A-Pet. The drive was established in memory of Lechner who died in a motorcycle accident four years ago. Donations of dry Science Diet dog, cat and kitten food, canned Friskies and Pedigree, Feline Pine and non-clumping Tidy Cat litter, cleaning products, various toys, treats and more (complete list here).
South Side Pet Food Pantry
Chicago – Parker’s at 1342 East 55th Street is sponsoring Paws for the Pantry that will help the South Side Pet Food Pantry. You may purchase Paws at $1, $5 and $10 and will be entered into a drawing valued at around $150. The drive runs through the end of December.
Tree House Humane Society
Virtual – As part of #GivingTuesday, YouGiveGoods has joined forces with various rescues around the country for a month long campaign aimed at helping these groups garner much needed supplies. Participating is easy. Go online, choose a group and decide how much you’d like to donate and that amount of food will the shipped. Tree House is one of the groups listed.
Waukegan Animals Getting Saved (WAGS)
Waukegan – The Waukegan Park District is collecting donations for WAGS through the Annual Food for Paws campaign. Dog and cat food, cat litter, collars, leashes, towels, blankets and pet supplies are being collected for WAGS to support Waukegan Animal Control. Donations may be dropped off through Friday, December 13 at the Belvedere Recreation Center at 412 South Lewis Avenue, the Field House Sport and Fitness Center at 800 North Baldwin and Jack Benny Center for the Arts in Bowen Park at 39 Jack Benny Drive.
Wet Nose Pet Food Pantry
Virtual – Downers Grove based Wet Nose Pet Food Pantry will not be holding their traditional pet food drive this year. The organization instead will be holding an online fundraiser for the pantry that features wreaths, swags, garland and baskets. If you use the club code WNPET at check out, the Pantry will benefit. This fundraiser runs through Christmas Eve.
