Chicago weekend pet scene: July 26-28

The Chicago weekend pet scene is a bit cat crazy with several cool adoption events aimed at finding homes for more of Chicago’s homeless cats and a kitten shower to help several rescues overflowing with kittens. There are also fun cocktail parties, cool lectures on pet behavior, ice cream socials, BBQs and so much more. Check out the events on Chicago’s weekend pet scene.

Weekend warm-ups

On Friday, get the Chicago weekend pet scene off to a great start supporting Found Chicago at Parlour on Clark at 6341 North Clark for the Fourth Annual Cocktails for Canines. The $10 donation at the door benefits the pets rescued by Found and there will be drink specials, raffle prizes and tons of fun. The party is from 7 to 10 p.m. with free champaign from 8 to 9 p.m.

Also on Friday, Tree House Humane Society is sponsoring a lecture and reading by Veterinarian and animal behaviorist Dr. Vint Virga at Chicago Party Animals from 6 to 8 p.m.. He’s the author of The Soul of All Living Creatures. Chicago Party Animals is at 1133 West Fulton Market.

Adoption events

It’s fair season and the DuPage County Fair is hosting it’s Third Annual Dog Adoption Event. Friday through Sunday, there will be several rescues on hand with their adoptable dogs and to talk about pet adoption. Learn more in this story.

If you’re looking for a new cat or cats to add to the family, several adoption events are on tap as well. The  South Suburban Humane Society holds its Catmus in July through Sunday. This is very cool cat adoption event where all fees are waived for the weekend and there will be special gifts for cat adopters. Stop by and experience Catmus at its very best.

It’s also the Cat Days of Summer at the West Suburban Humane Society in Downers Grove at 1901 West Ogden Avenue and they are overflowing with cats and kittens. From 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, they will be hosting a Purr-fect Paws cat adoption event. Adopters may “fish” for discounted adoption fees of up to 50 percent off. If you adopt a second cat the fees will be 50 percent off the first discount.

Stop by Collar & Leash at 1435 North Wells in Chicago Saturday for an adoption event with One Tail at a Time. Meet the adoptable dogs at Chicago’s newest humane pet store from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Alive Rescue will be at Kriser’s at 1638 North Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago for an adoption event from noon until 3 p.m. Also from noon until 3, Alive will be at Moonshine at 1824 West Division in Chicago for an adoption event hosted by Roscoe Village Animal Hosptial. Meet adoptable dogs and the vets from RVAH and 15 percent of the bar tab from 1 to 4 will be donated to Alive. Both of these events are also on Saturday.

Ruff Haus Pets will be hosting a special needs cat adoption event from noon until 3 p.m. with FCACC & St. Sophia’s Forgotten Felines. Stop by at 4652 North Rockwell Street in Chicago on Saturday.

Finally on Sunday, Tree House Humane Society will be at Unleashed at 3320 North Western Avenue from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. for an adoption and outreach event. Volunteers will be on hand with adoptable cats and to talk about the work of Tree House.

Vaccination Clinic

On Sunday McHenry County Animal Control will hold a low-cost rabies vaccination and microchip event from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The clinic will be at MCAC’s Adoption Center at 100 North Virginia in Crystal Lake. The cost is $10 for a one-year shot and $25 for a three-year and microchips are $15. More information is here.

Other fun events

On Friday and Saturday, join 2×2 Rescue for their Second Annual Second Chance Car Wash at 14020 Edison in Cedar Lake. Get a clean car for a $5 donation. There will also be a bake sale, hot dogs, chips and more.

Stop by the Sidewalk Sale to benefit Famous Fido.

On Friday through Sunday, check out this great sidewalk sale to benefit Famous Fido Rescue and Adoption Alliance at 5430 North Clark Street. Stop by from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. to check out home furnishing, books, clothing, music and lots of other goodies.

Famous Fido will also be hosting a BBQ & Ice Cream Social to benefit animals in need. Stop by Famous Fido at 5430 North Clark Street from 11 to 7 .m. on Saturday for music, food and Ice Cream and to check out the pets available for adoption.

On Saturday and Sunday, Chicago’s weekend pet scene will be taking over several local fests as well. Stop by the Taste of Lincoln on Lincoln between Fullerton and Wrightwood and check out the various rescues on hand. Many Chicago Pet non-profits will also be at Wicker Park Fest on Milwaukee Avenue from North to Paulina from noon until 10 p.m.

Prairie House Tavern in Buffalo Grove hosts its Fifth Annual Charity Fundraising Corn Roast from noon until 10 p.m. on Saturday. The $15 admission covers all you can eat buffet, music, games and more. The event benefits three charities – Placing Paws, Susan B. Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure, and the Police Torch Run for the Special Olympics.

Sunday is the Third Annual Pipes for Pits Poker Run to Benefit Bombshell Bullies. The ride starts and finishes at the Lamplighter Inn in Palatine and costs $20 per rider and $10 per passenger.  Registration starts at 9 a.m. Learn more here.

Finally, it’s been raining kittens since spring and several Chicago-area rescues are joining forces for a Kitten Shower to help care for all the bundles of fluff. The Shower runs on Sunday from noon until 4 p.m. at 21288 Brown Drive in Frankfort and will benefit CARF, Purrs from the Heart, St. Sophia’s Forgotten Felines, Triple R Pets and Lulu’s Locker Rescue. There will be drinks, appetizers and raffles and dozens of adoptable kittens. Check out the wish list online to see what these groups need to care for their rescues.
