A Tree Grows in Brooklyn Book Club

Books, sewing and eating with friends all come together several times a year when book club meets. One of my clubs only meets here once a year or so but the Classics Book Club meets 3 times a year at my house and I love it. Sunday was A Tree Grows in Brooklyn Book Club.

First thing I do is read the book and try to figure out a menu. Then I plan how I am going to set the table and do some sewing in that theme. I had a ball this time. tree book club b

I decided to make a table runner and matching napkins with a tree theme. You can read how to make one yourself here. It worked out really well!

I varied the blues of the place-mats to to with the table runner. The green was a nice contrast!

Why the lettuce? Because there is a New York Style chopped salad from the Pioneer woman, New York and Brooklyn, get it? I asked people in the club to bring an item they would like to have on their salad.

We had cheeses, olives, chopped vegetables, tomatoes plus nuts and cranberries. It was divine. And I forgot to get a picture, darn it.

After the stew, salad and bread we got ready to discuss the book. We had been doing it informally throughout the meal but we’re mainly teachers, we like an organized discussion. I used these questions.

Quite frankly, the questions were not that great. I should have made up my own but our discussion was great, this is a wonderful group.Tree Book Club d re

And while we discussed, we had coffee and dessert. And I did remember to take a picture of the dessert choices.

I know, you wish you were there! We had two kinds of homemade cookies, homemade bread pudding, Whole Foods pumpkin pie and mints!

Tree Book Club f reIt was a lovely afternoon. There were 8 of us but one left before we took the picture.

What did you ask? Did anyone dress in any special clothes? Just one nerd, me.

Yep, I am wearing a t-shirt from the book.

Don’t you just love it? ME TOO!

No one really noticed I was wearing it at the beginning, we just like to talk and catch up. It’s a great group of women. You would like it.tree book club e re

Sometimes we only have four women, this time we had eight. Either way, I love book clubs and reading. I hope you do too!

Sew happy!
