Millard Fillmore: Who He?

Born today was Millard Fillmore.

When POTUS*, sedition’s voices grew shrill more.

On the issue of slavery he straddled the fence.

He isn’t remembered, ‘cept in the past tense.**

*A 2017 C-Span poll of historians ranked Fillmore as the seventh-worst president. In his profile of Fillmore for the Miller Center of Public Affairs, historian Michael Holt writes: From the modern perspective, Fillmore seems almost an invisible man among Presidents. Books on him are all but nonexistent.

Millard Fillmore

**There used to be a Millard Fillmore Society whose members gathered on his birthday to remember him. Alas, it, itself, has been forgotten.

  • Great post, AW! Thank you for remembering Millard Fillmore.

  • When we had to memorize Presidents (and there were probably 10 or 11 fewer then), one could remember "Fillmore Pierce[d] Buchanan."

And if the poll were taken today, he would be the eighth worst President.

  • Thank you. As Roseanne Rosannadanna might have said, "It's always someone."

I wonder whether he was the last person named Millard.

  • In reply to Margaret H. Laing:

There is a chart on that, but it hit the wall in about 2000. Doesn't look that accurate.
