Betsy Ross: Legendary Seamstress

Today’s the birthday of Betsy Ross.

On her eternal honor’s been bestowed

For the flag of stripes, red/white across

And 13 stars on a field of blue she sewed.*

*despite no historical evidence of it.

  • Apparently, the legend was invented by Ross' grandson around 1870. He must have been a student of the great Parson Weems, who invented many fables about the founding generation including the one about George Washington and the cherry tree.
