Thoughts on Left-handedness

“Sinister” and “gauche” in the past one was branded

Merely because of being left-handed.

Ignorance was the source

Of this nonsense, of course.

And still rears its ugly head, to be candid.

If I need to give what some people call a left-handed compliment, I use the term backhanded compliment. Maybe I'm giving it away now, but generally, no one has ever corrected me on it.

  • Both appear to come from Latin or French for "left." The other connotations came later.

  • In reply to jack:

Gauche is still the correct (!) French word for left. Too bad that quip "I resemble that remark" didn't translate effectively even in my most recent class, a few years back.

  • When my grandfather first met me and watched me for a while, I'm told that he said to my parents "We don't have any left-handers in our family." I've always been grateful that my parents replied "Yes we do, and here she is." Thank you a super post, and hooray for our side!
