DOCTOR Jill Biden: If you have it, flaunt it!

Dr. Jill Biden speaks in support of her husband Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden during a drive-in campaign rally at Heinz Field on November 02, 2020 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

"Welcome to the New Age Of The Ambitious Woman. Terrifying, isn’t it? Once you start to look for them, ambitious women are everywhere. We have qualifications, degrees and even doctorates. We start businesses, we become billionaires. We are ambitiously educated, about our lives and the world. This, dear reader, is officially the end of days. Equality has arrived, and women can now command the same respect as men do, in whatever field we choose.

And have you heard? Jill Biden is heading for the White House, and for the first time in its history, a woman with a doctorate will become first lady. She has a title of her own that isn’t “wife” but “expert,” in this case on education. So in the 100 years since women were granted the vote in America, surely this shows us what women can really do when they put their minds to it."

Fern Riddell in The New York Daily News

Some say that Jill Biden should not be call Dr.

For using the title Joe Epstein has knocked 'er.

I know it's White noise

From Conservative "boys"

And she's heard it before; it mustn't have shocked 'er.

  • Speaking of so called conservative boys, I see one in the right pane who apparently copied something on this topic, and claims to be currently a "Chicago writer, editor ...." Both are false.

  • I have said before, but I must say again here, there is irony in criticisms of Dr. Biden for her pride in her earned doctorate when compared with the trophy wife currently presiding over the White House.

  • In reply to jnorto:

As Santa and rappers say "Ho, Ho, Ho."

  • I recently noticed that the Associated Press (AP) stylebook does not use "Dr." before a name unless the person is a medical doctor. I would be comfortable enough reading about "the president-elect and his wife, who has a doctorate in education," compared to "the president and his wife" at this time.

  • In reply to Margaret H. Laing:

This opened up a whole can of worms. For instance, many doctors at NorthShore Medical Group are doctors of osteopathy, which I don't know if that means that they are medical doctors, but at least means they were trained in Chicago instead of, say, Grenada. Then, I was asked (referring to a person I know) what's the difference between an ophthalmologist who doesn't do surgery and an optometrist, to which my reply was that the former is an M.D. and can prescribe drugs. Then the LLB degree was changed to JD, but a lawyer does not refer oneself as a doctor unless he or she has an LLD, which few outside of academia have (and would be misleading if the personal injury lawyers on TV don't have a medical degree).

With regard to Dr. Biden's husband, apparently one continues to be vice president (note no "former") until one becomes president elect, from The Office of the President-Elect, as stated on numerous backdrops, even though I didn't see that in Article II of the Constitution.I have also wondered, since JFK, why it was the president (or any other officer) elect instead of elected, at least after the general election or when the Electoral College met.On the other hand, the media were wrong when they said Biden "officially" won on about Nov. 6, just because the AP called it. Putin and McConnell were correct that it was official probably when the electors convened, even though it was inevitable around mid-November.

  • In reply to jack:

The LL.D. degree is now entirely honorary. There is a research doctorate in law, SJD or Doctor of Juridical Science, but few hold it, even in academia. Like the MD degree, the basic Juris Doctor or JD degree is a professional degree, not a research one. I think the custom in the law of not using the title "doctor" grew partly out of the idea that only those with a research doctorate, like the SJD, should use the title. Physicians never agreed with this.

Or, to make the point differently, Jill Biden may be more entitled to use the title than those to whom Joe Epstein would limit it.

  • This also reminded me of Dr. William H. Cosby Ed D, who earned that degree based on a thesis on the educational value of Fat Albert. But now his prefix is Perv.

  • My daughter's a doctor and I try to work that fact into just about every conversation. My daughter the doctor. There, I said it again.

My first father-in-law had a PhD in Biology and everyone called him "Doc."

Sometimes, if I'm asking for advice, I like to say, "You're the doctor, you tell me."

What's the harm? What's the brouhaha? Jill Biden has a PhD and deserves to be addressed as Dr. Biden. It shows respect and acknowledges her accomplishment. How can that be bad?
