To help the victims of war, disaster, loss,

Clara Barton* founded

The American Red Cross.

*”The Angel of the Battlefield” Clara Barton who once said if she couldn’t be a soldier, she could help soldiers. And wondrously she did, carrying supplies to the Union troops and medicine to the wounded. From the very beginning and throughout the Civil War, she risked her own life tending the fallen.  Later she did the same during the Franco-Prussian War in Europe.  Besides her humanitarian work, she was a pioneer feminist who campaigned for women suffrage and equal pay. “I shall never,” she vowed, “do a man’s work for less than a man’s pay.”  She was till her dying day quite a remarkable human being!
