Is the first European
To reach it by sea.
*Portuguese navigator and explorer Vasco da Gama took off from Lisbon on July 8, 1497 with 4 ships and 170 men. He returned on July 10. 1499. The round trip turned out to be the longest ocean voyage up to that time, longer than the distance around the equator. Two of the ships returned and less than a third of the crew. In 2016 one of da Gama’s ships was discovered off the coast of Oman with thousands of artifacts and nautical remains.
