The expedition

Of Lewis and Clark.

*Near Wood River, Illinois. President Jefferson had bought the Louisiana Territory, 827,000 square miles in all, from Napoleon for $15 million. Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis, his personal secretary and William Clark who had served with Lewis in the army.  The object of the expedition was to find a practical route to the Pacific Ocean, to establish peaceful relations with the Indian tribes along the way, and, among other things to record the plants and animals and bring back to the perpetually curious Jefferson specimens for him to study and preserve.  Lewis and Clark returned to St. Louis in September of 1806.
